I'll guess that there were two sires - the black/tan pup could be purebred (doesn't mean it's well-bred) from a white parent X black/tan parent (or blue as you say one parent is supposed to be).  The grey puppies are obviously husky or Malamute puppies - not crossed with black/tan GSD so I assume the mother was a white shepherd.  Possibly the white GSD was a husky cross too,, those grey pups look more  husky to me and less GSD, not half/half.

KCzaja -

as for puppies possibly being sables - again I don't think these puppies are sable GSDs - they are typical-colored grey husky or Malamute mixes.  BUT not being an expert on whites - if I'm not mistaken white on GSD is a masking gene, so the white dogs' genetic color could be sable - therefore there could potentially be sables in a litter of a white/sable and black/tan or blue/tan dog.

THANK YOU!!  I'd originally put a deposit on one of these pups, but when I told this person I'd decided not to get the pup because I didn't believe they were purebred, she got a little snippy with me.  I asked her to keep the deposit as a donation to her rescue.  But the argument that I pushed with the DH is that, outside the color markings, their features just DID NOT look 100% GSD to me.  The head shapes, the noses, even the ears a bit, but he still wasn't convinced, so I told him I would post here in the GSD World, so he could see what others had to say that had been raising GSD's most of their lives.

Regardless what it is,...if you want a good GSD do not buy these.

Molly, I wondered that briefly and figured someone else could explain it better.

Tihannah- another big red warning flag is when they use the word "rare" to hide the fact they are breeding a fault on purpose. You did right.

From what I remember, yes white is a masking gene. It also can dilute the colors of offspring.

Ex: it will cause a black/tan to look silver hued. It also can mask sables, etc.

However, I have seen my fair share of diluted pups out of a white parent (we have a lot of white shepherd breeders in my area) and they do not look like these pups.

As others have said, the muzzles are too wide and head to different to be GSD. The colors are also off. Having owned Malamutes in the past, I'd bet my house these are Mal x GSD. Go do a google search on Malamute x German Shepherd puppies and look at the similarities with these pups.

The genes that control colour and physical appearance don't sort themselves out 50/50 in mixed breed pups, due to the influence of dominant and recessive genes. It is very common for pups to look much more like one parent than the other, so I am betting these pups are 50/50 husky and shepherd. The dark pup could be purebred, but I wouldn't bet on it, either!  I've seen a shepherd mix that looked exactly like a purebred shepherd, until I noticed it had a white sock on the one foot. The owner told me it was a mix, though I forget what it was crossed with.

the ears are also wayyyyyyyy  too small and triangular to be GSD ears - they are husky ears on a husky (or Malamute) head shape, with husky color and husky markings and husky coat-type.  what do the tails look like?  short, curly and carried high?  Bet so....

That's for sure, Molly! The shilohs had a malemute/GSD cross introduced to the blood lines around 1990, to improve genetic diversity, and we are STILL having problems with tail carriage!

Yup,  that is a dead giveaway .....  if that tail is curled up !!  and Malamute and Husky's ear are much smaller and can I tell you about a Malamute's head and neck .... very big !! and they hurt .. I can remember a few times getting hit in the face while playing with my Bandit ... so many times I thought she broke my nose ... I saw stars and bluebirds for a few minutes LOL....  but all kidding aside .. Malamutes are great dogs ... she was a big clown !!!  she used to take household items and bury them all over the yard ... including my Grandfather's dentures that he left in a case on his night table....  LOL ...  she did bring them back......   a year later !!

KCzaja -  I agree...  I think a Malamute jumped the fence !!!
