Veronica: Many factors that dogs come in contact in our homes are allergins and can cause a dog or pet to be sick......carpet is number uno     !.  and the clorox or swiffer pads that every one thinks is so clean .......chemical that are invasive to thru the blood system thru arbsortion.....unclean a/c ducts or filters.......chlorine in the drinking waters provided by the city......too much copper or minerals in well water,,,have it checked.....swimming pools are a horrible contaminate,,,,,,chemicals on grass , yards , flower beds and pot plants.....there are 2 or 3 hundred poisoneous plants.....and things in your house that emit gaseous fumes that can cause dogs to get sick....gradually and then one day   bang   your at the vet with a very sick animal.....paints on walls, fertilizers in the barn., and a lot of dogs have reactions to frontline and heart guard...and advantakic...and Revolution has too many chemicals.....there were shots that we used for several year that started killing dogs,,,proheart >??????spelling , since I didnt use it and for several months after Dodge chemo warned vets they still used it to get rid of the supply they all had in stock......many things that make sick dogs come out of a bottle that has been prescribed.....the pharmacutical co. would go broke if you cure the causes....and they dont want to do that....money talks in this country and sorry but vets fall into the same chapter of Kevin Trudeaus book....I dont need to run a batch of strains of allergy test to tell me where to look and start eliminating things that hurt and can cause problems.....metal buckets made in Mexico have contaminated after they get older...what dogs mainly drink out of....

gimme10,I know FIRST HAND how you feel since i am also dealing with this for almost 2 years now.I am going again to the specialist this morning,I would investigate the possibility of SARCOPTIC MANGE.It should be ruled out before anything else because its so easily missed.I did treat for it and 1 of my vets swore on a bible that it was the problem for sure and my other vet said no.Well it turned out that it was NOT the scabies,so we went on to a true HYPOALLERGENIC hydrolysed food called Ultra ZD by Hills and after almost 4 months my dog is still itching. This has got to be the most fraustrating thing .It is so hard to diagnose. You must try different things as some dogs are cured with just 1 simple change while others are not.You are more than welcome to e-mail me if I can be of anymore help,Domenic

Yellowrose wrote "chemicals on grass , yards , flower beds and pot plants" LOL! To funny on the "pot plants"!

Domenic I am not sure about the Dog Food by Hills you are trying, not familiar with it at all... but I do know that when dogs eat dog food that is causing them the itchies the dog is full of toxins. So it does take sometime to get this out of their system. Its called detox. (duh) My female I mentioned was put on homecooking when she was about 2 years old and she quit itching almost immediately, then I got lazy went back to dog food. About 3.5 years ago (she was now 7 years old) I switched back to RAW when I lost "my boy" to cancer. That time it took her most of the summer to quit her itching. She would get tiny little bumps on her skin too. She stays relatively free from itching now, blowing coat will sometimes get her going again. I realise I keep talking about just one dog, but I have had mulitple dogs with some of this itchiness and good clean human grade food always solved the problem for me. One male I did do the testing and shots on, it did not work.

I also realise feeding RAW or Homecooked is not for everyone, its why I would suggest trying a food with minimal ingredients.  Add some enzymes, probiotics, and fish oils too, high in omegas. Wish ya luck!

I had the same problem with my dog.  The food he was eating was wheat based and I switched to Canidae with a tablespoon of Linatone in it and all itching has stopped.

Raw is the way to go as The Yellow Rose say's       But if you have to feed kibble look into Canine Complete  at  www.thewholisticpet.com     Give it a couple of weeks and watch the difference.    Read the testamonials on the site a lot of them have to do with itching.

A lot of the itching problems come from all the crap they put in commerical dog food especially kibble.

I feed my 16 week old GSD pup Urban Wolf and raw meat with Canine Complete wild salmon oil and goats milk yogurt and organic cottage cheese. It's basically a BARF diet.

You can't believe the way the pup looks everyone says what are you doing to make him look so good.

Very easy I educated myself on dog nutrition and prompletly thru out a bag of $65.00 premium kibble. Ever since then my pup stopped scratching and the bloat went right away. He looked like a completely different dog.

The information is right here on the internet   Take the time to educate yourself.  I'll bet once you find out what is in your favorite kibble and who makes it.  You'll throw  it right in the garbage that is right where it belongs.

Have the dog skin tested. Allergies are getting to be common in this breed.  If the dog tests postive, don't breed him/her, it's genetic.

by Blitzen on 05 June 2007 - 21:06

By allergy testing I meant skin testing. The blood tests are not accurate. The vet will have the results of the skin testing immediately and will order an injectable antigen specially blended for your dog based on what she is allergic to.  l

Trailrider:  I guess that shows hold old I am : I grew up when a plant in the house or outside in a pot is called a "Pot Plant"   but now I guess I have to say a "Potted Plant"   on the Max site I said send the people a 'Pot Plant" and 4pack said yeah and give the leo a good reason to go back to the house!   LOL   I call refrigerators  Ice boxes and of course I never saw one used , but my mother who was a Yankee always called our refrigerator an Icebox and what you learn in your youth usually sticks in some part of the brain...so I usually say  put it in the icebox   habit!!!!!

I imagine if you had a pot plant maybe if the dog ate some of it ,hed cure his itching or go into orbit....
