Do GSDs as a breed tend to be a "one person dog"?  As in they prefer one family member, over others? Mine prefer me, then the kids.. They pretty much ignore the husband, which is his doing, since he isn't involved with them, other than when they need his opposable thumbs for various tasks, if I am not around lol.. They will obey the other family members but prefer to be near me. Is this typical of the breed?

IMO it's normal.

I have always found this to be true. All but one have preferred me, yet our dogs always bonded with all the family members as well. The only one that has not preferred me was a rehome that was raised and cared for by a man and my husband was the first one to meet and bond with him. Even though I am the one that feeds and cares for him, my husband is still his number 1. Really annoys me, lol!

It helps if you walk and feed them....lol

I was going to say what Gustav said but he got in first !

Actually I am often surprised at how accomodating GSDs
can be towards people in their families who are NOT 'the
One', rather than being surprised at them being 'one person
dogs', a reputation the breed has had this many long year.

I was just curious, as mine have all had a favorite person.. They like the kids, and will follow them around outside, in fact our female saved my daughter when she was attacked by neighbor's pit bull last year, so I know they like the kids, but if I am outside, they will stay closer to me, they will go check on what kids are doing, then come back to me.. I've owned Bouviers in the past along with cattle dogs who were definitely one people dogs, and also owned dogs that didn't care who they ran off with,  but wasn't sure about the GSD..
I've noticed with my GSDs, that they almost treat the kids like "theirs".. They do not try and dominate my kids, and respect them, they won't try to take food or toys from kids and allow kids to crawl all over them, but they will circle the kids if a stranger comes up, and will even run the horse back, if they get to close to kids in pasture.. They don't do that with me, it's more like they look at me asking if it's ok, then go lay down lol.. Maybe they do love the kids more!

My Mal. prefers me to my husband, but that's because I give him food/water and am with him 100% of the time. My husband is at work and isn't with him as often. However, my hound mix (a spayed female) loves my husband and will snuggle up to him over me any time of the day even though I feed her. :-)

Maya should love me more, I saved her from near starvation with her EPI, I feed her, train her and play ball with her. Yet, her idol is my husband. He is the one out working the fields, on the tractor, pruning trees, etc.... and so as far as Maya is concerned, he is who she wants to be around. He is alot more fun.  I pick out the burrs, I give her the B-12 shot, and yell at her if she even looks at my horses ( look first ,chase second ). All the other stuff I do for her she forgets. Where's dad, where's dad, where's dad?????  Oh well, what can you do??

Usually you will find that the German Shepherd will pay more attention to the person that pays more attention to them. Usually Feeds...Plays with and just gives them more time and attention....

I agree with Q Man and if your husband or kids did half the work your gsd wouldnt have "A ONE" as obviously at least. Its been me and my fiance 50/50 since day one and she knows. i still think she favours me a lil lol
