I am not sure about the type (there are different types) of chip, but I have always used the ones supplied by the "Home Again" registry-mainly because those are the type ke[t at the office of the veterinarian of choice.

Home Again it is used by the AKC

Jeffers (Injector $14.95 & Scanner $219.95)  www.jefferspet.com   1-800-533-3377

KV Pet (Injector $31.49 & Scanner $269.00)  www.kvpet.com   1-800-423-8211

Your vet (injector $65 - $75)

Don't be misled it is easy to plant the microchip in your animal youself and save you a lot of money.

any chip can now be registered with the AKC CAR ( companion animal recovery);  the sweetheart deal between AKC and HomeAgain ended a couple of years ago.

i use the HomeAgain chips. the big problem with Avid chips is that only their readers can show you the chip number - other readers can only indicate the presence of the Avid chip.

There is also 24PetWatch and it can be read by both the old and new HomeAgain scanners. From what I understand it is a univeral chip so it can be read by scanners outside of the country. Homeagain did  its best to block  the entry into the country b the new chip, hope again basically has the market cornered on the chips. I dont think Avid is valid for out of country travel. I prefer home again for several reasons but mainly because of the 24 houranimal poison control offer. On the other hand, with 24 Petwatch, they offer emergency insurance for $20.00 a year in the event the pet gets lost and is injured. They authorize and pay for up to 2000.00 in emergency vet care when they are called and given the number which gives me peace of mind, if one of my dogs gets lost, I know if they get hurt or are hurt when found they will get cared for and not lay on the shelter or vet kennel floor for several days until either I am found or the 3 day waiting period is up. Around here, if a pet is brought to the vet or shelter injured, it either lays there in pain until the owner reclaims or if it is badly injured, it is euthanized.

I've used Avid through the years.  It is what my vet had available when I first starting micro chipping 12-13 years ago.  At that time you could sign up for a lifetime, unlimited number of animals for not very much.   They don't offer that option anymore.

I use Avid.

You can purchase directly from Avid, in bulk, 25 chips for something like $200.00(don't quote me on that).  You do have to buy a syringe and needles, but overall, it is still cheaper....and they carry the chips that are recognized in Europe, which is a blessing as well.

I have used other chips and will use other chips in a pinch, but Avid has always been my first choice.

My european female has two chips - a Virbac and an Avid - I couldnt for the life of me figure out how to get into the virbac system (called and emailed and called again)...and when the vets went to scan her they couldnt find it...so we put the avid just in case.  My american bred male has the avid chip.

our claire was a rescue and was spayed and neutered and Avid chipped before we took her home. i had angus Avid chipped at our vet's office. i was only offered Avid both times; didn't even know about other options.
