Evidently, the Livingston County, MI animal shelter was considering changing its policy on Pit Bull and PB/mix adoptions. They were considering temperament testing ALL BREEDS and adopting out those dogs that passed. For the last two years, they have euthanized all Pits and Pit mixes. Below is an editorial letter, regarding the policy change, from a member of PETA. Now, the articles about the policy change have been removed. Anyone in MI aware of this and its outcome?
The only good thing about this is that, I believe (and maybe too late), that people are really starting to see PETA for what they are and stand for. Their motto should be "The only good dog is a dead dog", if they had any truth in advertising!

Here's an unfortunate incident which just occurred in California..

Due to the sensation nature of the injury sustained by the child, this is getting all over the news, out here.
Everyone talks about "temperament testing".. But dogs don't do this out of malice or true aggression, per se. It's instinct, and the instinct to catch and hold / pull is well developed in "game" dogs. These dogs were originally bred to be butchers' dogs and had to be able to hold very aggressive and powerful animals, like boars and bulls. Many a good dog has saved the life of a man in the stockyards and farmyards, I'm sure. There is a video on Youtube of a man being knocked down and gored / crushed by a bull. A little bulldog comes in out of nowhere and grabs that bull, giving the man time to get away. I'm sure the dog saved his life, or at least prevented serious injury. The bull was just "getting to work" on him when the dog intervened!
I know that dogs can act completely differently in twos and threes than when they are alone.. only humans about.. Even GSDs are capable of savaging another dog very badly, if there are two or more against one. I've seen it happen! My friend's bitch was killed by two kennel mates, and these were well socialized, house dogs, raised all together from pups. It can happen very easily. I had to talk my friend out of having the one who she thought did the killing put down... for which she thanked me, later on.
Most of us would never think of training our dogs NOT to grab and pull on rags, etc. I wonder if this might be a good thing, to train dogs NOT to pull on rags, if they are going into pet homes.. I suspect that the dogs did not see the baby as a "person", but were interested in the smells and started to pull on the diaper. When both joined in, the baby became a toy / prey object.
I have seen a large male GSD lunge for a baby in swaddling cloth, when it was handed from one woman to the other. He got clocked for that one, but this is the prey reaction, and the dog HAD been trained in this case by use of prey drives, so it could almost be expected.
