Does anyone have any experience with this? Are there any problems associated with it as the dog matures? Is it considered a genetic fault in some lines?
I've had a couple of pups with an "innie" instead of an "outie". Just keep an eye out for a rash from urine burn in the area, I just cleaned the girls once a day with soap and water. It will right itself after the first heat so it's important to inform the puppy buyer of this as some vets are so gung ho on early spay. I had my vet put it on the health check paperwork that went to the puppy buyer. After the first heat you can't tell those girls from the others.

Thank you for the info, I've seen this in a few pups, but didn't know if it would fix itself with age.

My girl stayed that way until she had a litter. Her ONLY litter. And she was difficult to breed; it was like the male could only go in an inch or two, and there was no stricture.
Sometimes it will correct itself. My vet usually recommended these dogs go through their first heat cycle.
Sometimes these bitches have incomplete / immature reproductive tracts. I would not breed them. I want to see a normal, well developed vulva in a female, even as a puppy it should be obviously well developed. I would not sell this puppy as a breeding bitch. And yes, it seems to be becoming more prevalent.. perhaps because people are able to use artificial insemination, now.
In an adult, this is called an "immature vulva" and is cause for rejection by agencies buying / recruiting working dogs. The urine scalding is the problem.
Also, the bitch I had who had that is very large, muscular, and masculine. I don't think I'd ever breed a masculine bitch again period. She did get bred naturally eventually, though....and NONE of her daughters or granddaughters had it.
I'm curious, is the issue the original poster discussing, is it the same as an "Inverted Vulva?" I had a lab puppy who had this a long time ago, the vet called it an inverted vuvla. Just wondering if its the same thing? She never had urine burns though
Jami had a tucked vulvar area as a pup, she went thru two heats before I had her ovaries out. She is almost two and still no problems. It is just a watch and see for us. You can talk to a reproductive specialist, it does not hurt to have all your research done.
Always,
Cee
DDR, the way I interpreted it, is that it's held lower than a normal vulva, and is tucked into the triangle between two thighs and the belly. It's just kind of aimed down instead of out. Hard to explain. My girl's was a normal SIZE, just seemed like an odd location.
