What country are you in? And are you saying that your last litter was lost because of canine herpes virus?

There is a vaccine in Europe for Herpes virus. However, the proper use of the vaccine requires that it be given when the female is in heat or by 7-10 days after mating and the second dose given between 1 and 2 weeks before the expected whelping. Like many vaccines, a single vaccine might not have been sufficient to mount a strong immune response. That is why the second one is given. Since her prior litter supposedly died of herpes, she may already have antibodies and be able to pass some antibodies onto the pups, but this is why you should consult your vet and this should be checked. Some dogs do not maintain the antibody level very long.

This is a very serious canine disease with a high mortality rate affecting pups. Most literature suggests infected pups will die before 5 weeks old, so having a pup at 8 weeks die suggests the possibility that something else was also involved. Pups who survive can be infected as well and often suffer from cardiac or neurological disorders. Was any serious necropsy done on the pups from the last litter to establish a firm cause of death?
