Why would someone want to cross them?
What would be the goal?
I have seen plenty of cross bred animals but not this combination.
Some are a step up and some are not, Mutts can sometimes make great pets.
I don't think I'd want this particular combination.

I have seen them. I think they look weird. If it were me, I'd have found a small, crazy, fast GSD or an oversized, powerful Mal instead.

There's a discussion here:

I do not believe in breeding any two animals together that are not of the same breed. In doing so, would be creating a designer breed. Each of the two breeds you said have basically the same abilities but on different intensity levels. I don't understand what would be the purpose and the logic in doing such a breeding. A smiliar post was previously discussed.  My question about such as bredding is, What are you trying to accompish or achieve?  Just my opinion!!!

If you want a Mali buy one .If you want a GSD buy one. Each has it,s own distinct usefulness both can accomplish the same work cross breeding won,t improve either one.

I have seen quite a few, all having been imported from Europe and all working for Police Deparments. I can find nothing wrong with any good working dog. People have been doing it for a long time. I believe the reason behind it is to get the bulk of the GSD with the mind of the Mali, but I'm not sure on that one. I was told once that us Americans want bigger dogs and Malis are not big, so they bred them to GSD and out of the resulting dogs, they are "called" whichever breed they resemble most.

The ones I have seen usually look like heavier Malis with a less pointy face, but the color of a Mali. Some have heads that look like GSD heads on a Mali. Interesting creatures to say the least, but the ones I have seen can surely work.

Uhhh, malis have had gsd folded into them over the generations.  It was always about workability for the mali and breeders weren't so uptight about "purity'...

"Does the dog work?"  I think that has been the standard!  Isn't this also why there is sometimes difficulty in discerning the different "types" of Belgian shepherds?  This is more a case of over-classification and anal retention...

OK, come and get me with your flame torches!  I am wearing my special flame-retardant suit today.

No, I can't cite sources and I thought this was kinda common knowledge.

In the end, I wouldn't want to see this cross openly marketed.

freemont:

I,m sure you won,t get flamed, I,ve got a male line bred on Orry and all I hear is "where do you think the Mali came in at". They probably should work well but you can find good working dogs from either breed that will fit the bill. I,ve always thought if I did,nt have GSD,s i,d probably look at dutchies.

by akamai dog training on 18 March 2010 - 19:03

I think with this cross you would have an of swith and drive when you need it, agility and lets look at it this way  you dont see to many gsd doing wall jumps like you see malis, i have a gsd and a dutchy as well as malis and i think crossing the two would make great sport dogs.and working .......

and as soon as the AKC touchs a breed its over

i think we are very closed minded about breeding look at the breeders in europe cross there working dogs all the time and they have the best dog. ware do american buy all there dogs from? Europe..... bert ballon his dog is a mali cross with gsd great dog

i just dont get it ow well its good to know what every one els thinks

thats just me thow
