I'll be arriving in LAX from Bangkok with my dog who will have traveled with me as carry on. Therefore, no need for me to pick him up in the cargo dept. BUT, what are the procedures for getting him through immigration/customs as a "walk through"? I have been informed of the paper work I'll need for him, but he must have to be inspected by someone, right?
Second question: Does the immigration office for the dog close at any certain time? My flight gets in LAX at 9:30 pm.

Yes they will be closed, how old is the dog, need vet cert and rabbies, I would call customs and make sure of what they will want to clear him. See if you can get them to send you the paper work you are going to need to fill out at customs in advcance, so you can have it all done.

You can ask customs. I don't think you'll need to do anything more with him if he's a carry on. Just pick him up with your luggage and go. Any rabies and other things will be needed to board the dog.. not to take him home. You won't even be able to board the dog if the health certificates and papers are not in order. Ask the airlines what they require. They are responsible to ask for the right things and will also help to guide you.
I agree that it's a lot better to try to get things all straight before arriving in LAX. But, don't be too surprised if you get some conflicting answers from the experts. If you can get him / her on the plane, you should be able to just pick up and go home directly through the passenger cargo terminal.

I've never flown with my service dog, but from what I've heard from others who travel with their dogs, dogs go through customs just the same way humans do. You show the agent your papers and the dog's papers, and then you're good to go!
