 Hi all,
I have a bitch bred last week. She smells from her vulva today. Temp is 99.9 no discharge. It smell sour. Color of discharge is pink.

More likely to be a vaginitis than pyometra, but if it's the former and isn't treated then the potential for a pyometra to develop exists...have your vet take a look at her (ideally they'll swab the vagina and make a smear to examine under the microscope) ASAP.  An open pyometra won't just smell 'sour'--it will smell putrid, and there will be a purulent (pus or pus-streaked) discharge. A closed pyo won't create a discharge, and it's far less likely there will be any odor involved.

sarella,my bitch had an open pyometra recently.she had been slightly off colour ,not eating very well, fussy with her food, lethargic, peeing and drinking more than usual.then she started dropping small spots ,od wot look like dirty, muddy water.this was approx.1 month after her season.she had to have a spey(she,s nearly 10)i,ve had a slight bloody discharge in a couple of bitches after they,d been bred,no probs.if you,re worried ,phone or visit your vet,to put your mind at rest.hope your bitch takes and good luck with your litter.Carole from the uk.

I had that happen one time on a bitch I did a transcervical on she had a bad case of vaginitis a few days after the breeding I don't think it has anything to do with pyo  Dr Hutch was the sending Vet he did not seem to think it was a big deal,,the dog was treated with antibiotics and it cleared up pretty quick but I would get her in ASAP

I find my bitches smell very hormonal when they are ready to breed. When they are in the car and going to visit their one true love and smell that way I say Yes they are ready to mate.

Most girls have a very distinct odor when they are in heat.. years ago I took one to the vet in panic but she was fine.... I can always tell what stage they are at cuz the closer they get to ovulating the stinkier they are.... or should I say .. fragrant!
A pyo has accompanying symptoms as mentioned.. fever, inappetance, often vomiting, weight loss... but if it makes you feel better.. go to the vet!!

Hey, that was a cool word, inappetance.
(sorry for the minor highjack)

we are going to the vet this morning. If it's a vaginitis how do they get that?

good luck Sarella.it DOES NOT SOUND LIKE A PYO TO ME.as said in another post.just an infection which will soon be cleared up with antibotics.Carole.

Pyo usually hits one or  two months after the dogs is in heat and not bred ,not right after breeding, Usually by breeding them it increases the blood flow to the uterus and prevents pyo,
