I am new to this and have been looking for a companion dog. I have a question about German Shepherd puppies. In comparison to other dogs, why are most of these puppies rear feet pointed outward? I am also looking at Dobs, Boxers and Rotts. These other three all have straight legs and feet.

Am I missing something?

I mean I do not think it will make them any better or worse but just a question.

Is this maybe for running?

The feet should not be turning out, nor should the stifle be rotated out.  You must take into mind....Is the puppy standing properly, or just standing goofy at the moment.  Watch the puppy move (trot & walk) also.  I like to judge movement on a loose lead, if the puppy cannot be free, in a safe area.  I prefer the puppy off lead and moving naturally.

What state are you in?

What is a stifle?

The puppies I have seen with this are this way even when trotting.  I was looking from the rear while they run.  But, these are German Show and a few Working Lines.  Otherwise they look good but those rear feet/legs look strange.

I don't know, I may go with the Boxer.

What age are the puppies you were looking at?  It could be a growing stage. I've seen  puppies do that, but grew out of it. I can't say if they had bad hips or not as adults, because they were not of my breedings, so I had no reason to follow up on it.   Myself, I wouldn't buy a puppy that moves that way because I just wouldn't want to have to live through that growing stage. I would always be wondering if the hips were good or not.  There are far too many other  puppies that DON'T move that way that I feel I don't need to buy a puppy moving that way. Just my opinion.

As Stated you are visiting the wrong kennels - You are not ready yet --  Do more homework. Then go looking for a puppy.

I have a feeling he's talking about the stack.  One foot forward?

The hind quarters should be straight.  Having said that, you are looking at a variety of breeds with very different qualities and temperaments.  As someone else said, you should probably do some more research, decide what you want in a dog and if that leads you back to the German Shepherd breed, come back and people here can help you find a pup with correct structure.

If you look at a dogs hind leg as if it were your own leg, the stifle would be the knee (the hock the heel and then the toes) in order from the hip down.  Hope that helps you recognize it.  Sounds like you have a lot of homework to do.  Good luck.
