Not just meat, raw meat and bone.  Never feed meat only, it has to be roughly in balance with raw bone.  Cooked bones can kill your dog, don't do it thinking you will play it safe.  Unless you think swallowing jagged knives is smart.

Do a little research on google and there are many threads on here.  After you have done a little research, you will have specific details you want to know about.  Every raw feeder has a slightly different take on it.  Some people are combination feeders.

Collecting personal opinions is not that helpful.  Will you just go with the ones that shout the loudest?

Good luck with your research.

very good michele ! Your comment about personell opinions was right on!      I can not find any historical evidence  of dogs cooking over open flames to enhance the flaovor of thier  food!  The only evidence would be the scraps given by humans  while dogs were being domesticated! In the wild dogs ate uncooked meats from the kill and or scavanged off dead animals! research all articles on raw feeding! Never give your dog cooked bones!

I go with kibble/cooked chicken/cooked mince/fish diet.
A friend of mine worked in a pet food factory and told me what went into tinned dog food, don't go there!!!!

I am no expert on this subject, but I can tell you of my personal experience. When I switched my allergy dog from a high quality kibble to raw she improved quite a bit. I did it cold turkey and had no problems. We recently adopted a new dog and did it the same way (cold turkey), with no problems. My dogs get 10%-15% bone, 10% organ meat and 75-80% muscle meat- various protein sources. A great source of info is the yahoo raw feeding group. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/

A word of caution- If you do decide to feed raw don't expect your vet to be supportive. Most conventional vets are very much against it.

Most holistic vets think it is the only way to go. We recently saw a vet (DVM) who uses a combination of both holistic and conventional treatment approaches, and she said that her clients who feed their dogs raw have much healthier dogs overall. She totally believes in it. She gives seminars on holistic treatment methods and raw feeding in effort  to educate conventional vets. Most of them are very resisitent though.

Good luck!

That group is fantastic. Everyone should go there to read.

Starchar -- What is your opinion as to why "conventional" Vets are against raw feeding?   I give my dog raw egg yolks and ground beef; however, my Vet told me to nuke them.....but I still give it to him uncooked.

oops -- just read the Post about the canned meat.  I add Wellness Human Grade Canned Meat to my dog's kibble.  He loves it, and I have had no problems at all.

Maggie, MANY years ago, like in the early 70s, there was a study that indicated that raw egg whites inhibited the absorption of other nutrients. However, you had to feed like 6 or more raw eggs per dog per day to make it happen. Well, a bunch of people hopped on that bandwagon and turned it into a kind of urban myth...Just like some people still think that aluminum pans will give you Alzheimer's.
