my dog, Miley, was killed by two newfoundland dogs in 2008, on friday the 13th.
he was a smooth coated parson russell. the dogs had escaped and killed my dog while he was on a walk.
it was the most tragic experience.

Usually Newfies aren't aggressive. Then again Great Pyranese aren't supose to be either and I was attacked by one....it was my bosses. They never appligized for it either and they knew I didn't like or trust it and it didn't like me.

Great Pyrs, as one of the Guardian breeds, CAN be quite aggressive.  It all depends on how socialized they are with people, as puppies.  Newfies are not usually aggressive, but anytime a large dog encounters a small one, things can go badly for the small one.  Dog on dog aggression is quite a bit different than dog on human.  Sorry about your little dog.

My old neighbor had a "newfie"  that was horriblely aggressive.  she had to muzzle it everytime she let it out and it charged me and the children on more then one occation.  It also attack a dog being walked by a young boy while exitin her car one day.  The irony of it is she was a "dog trainer" at a local chain pet store....go figure.

I would say aggression toward humans is not the norm for Newfoundlands - but I have known extremely aggressive Goldens and Labs too - not the norm for the breed.  Great Pyrs on the other hand - not so much - they are a livestock guardian breed and though they are more "low key" than some of the other LG breeds, they can be quite strong and aggressive toward people - and other dogs - if they are not socialized properly (and not raised as LGs).

All of the Newfies I have known have been very sweet.  But there are always exceptions, in every breed.

Gotta go with Molly on this.  Newfs as a rule are very lay back and people friendly.  Pyrs tend to be extreemly aloof with strangers, though not necessarily aggressive unless cornered or threatened.  Pyrs as well as Kuvaz, Akbash etc were bred as guardians, while the Newf was not.  Saints have some history of aggression, though most I've known were sweet.

Saying that it doesn't excuse or ease the pain of loosing your lil guy to an attack, regardless of the breed of the dog that attacked him.  When you get more than one dog you get into pack behavior... and small dogs, especially bold ones who will stand and fight rather than cower and run away often get the bad end of it.  So sorry for your loss

Sorry for your loss

Not to hijack, but add to the Pyr stories.. I used to groom one who was about 6 years old. Owner had him since he was a puppy. One time I blocked off half my day to groom him and the owner never showed up. I was friends with him so called him and left bitchy messages.
Well, he came in the next day with half of one side of his face stitched up. And his ear had nearly been torn off. Apparently the dog had gotten into a bag of food and when the owner went to pull him away, the dog mauled him.
He brought the dog to the pound to be euthanized. Lo and behold another acquaintance went to the pound about a week later and saw him there UP FOR ADOPTION. The shelter workers thought he was too sweet to be PTS!!! Anyway, the owner was able to take him and brought him to a vet where he made sure the dog was destroyed.
Scary thought, especially with such a large and powerful breed.

Our neighbour has many sheep.  From 8 wk old pups, his GP's are put in with the sheep. They stay with the sheep 24/7.  You see them in the fields with them.  Amazing really

However, you wouldn't want to go in the field with them without the owner.
