Someone gave me an excellent link last year when I was trying to condition for the AD
And my friend in Alabama he wants to start conditioning his dog on the bike and I told him I would try to find out what the link was.
Sorry I can't find it.
If anyone has that info will you post it for me.?
Thank You!

I found that the gradual conditioning of the link given didn't cause any problems with sore feet from asphalt, which is where I had to do most of my conditioning, although I did make an effort to get to dirt roads and grass so not every session was on asphalt.
Agree with the speedometer/odometer. At first I simply used the Timer feature on my cell phone; I did a lot of conditioning in a Business Park - the main road is exactly one-half mile and is not perfectly flat; also used a dirt track at a local high school. Finally went to the local bike shop and got a speedometer/odometer. MUCH easier than having to stick to areas I could drive first to measure distances, and of course great for checking your speed - slow & steady, sprints, etc.

LOL, I was, too, and actually had a 16yo young man on stand-by to ride the bike in case I had problems - I was worried about the heat - but it went great for both of us.
There was a dog who "never really trained for it" when we did our AD; owner felt the dog was very fit as he was in SchH training and got plenty of exercise...after the first few Km this poor dog WALKED most of the distance, and when we went out of sight of the judges they cut the distance and turned around short. Yes, the dog was given an AD that day. Don't know why.
Yes, training the dog to trot comfortably along with the bike is much nicer than introducing them the morning of the AD in the parking lot. I believe in conditioning and training as being most fair and beneficial to the dog. I have a very strong dog who had to be taught the rules of bicycling - it's great now, though, and a wonderful way to keep him fit.
