My girl Zoe, keeps having irregular heat cycles, like every 2 months!!  I called the vet and he said he can't swab her until she comes into heat again!!  She had 3 successful litters and the last time my male bred her but she didn't take...  I am not worried about breeding her again, just wandering what causes their hormones to run amuck!!!  Will spaying her help?  And will she loose her working drives if spayed?  Thanks...

"Every two months" sounds pretty freaking regular to me! But if you are asking what causes TOO MANY heat cycles, it seems to be genetic. It's also more common for GSDs to have 2-4 month heat cycles than other breeds. The problem is, if your bitch doesn't have at least two months of NON heat cycle between the actual "heat" parts (anestrus), she probably won't be able to conceive and you might as well spay her.

Funny to think of infertility as being genetic, no?

Wow!!  That is wild!  I never knew that...  My girls usually do every 4-6 months, Zoe is just my "special one"!  lol  Well, she was a terrific mama, I was happy with the 3 litters...  I wasn't sure if spaying her would hinder her ability to work, I can't imagine her being a pudge laying around!!  lol  Actually I would probably pass out!!  hehehehe  Great info...Thanks.

The problem is that too frequent cycles can end up as pyometra...the uterus just wears itself out. My girl's uterus was shot by the time she was 5, and she only has 4 month cycles.

Also remember that every time a female dog goes into heat the hormones actually attack the uterus cause the walls of the uterus to thicken and making it harder for the fertilitzed eggs to implant..  I think that is how it goes.

Cyst on ovaries can also cause problems.

I have one of those frequent cycling females and every time I have the money to spay her she is in heat.  When I don't have money she isn't.  But I will catch her this summer.

I also am of the crowd who believe there is/can be a genetic componet.

I've had four generations of them do it now, 3.5-4 month cycles, and I mean ALL the girls. I'm pretty sure about it!

Irregular cycles can be caused by thyroid problems as well. Ive had more than one dog with estrus problems that turned they could not conceive and tested positive hypothyroid. I actually have a male now with NO sex drive and he too is dx as hypothyroid. Its worth checking out. IMO hypothyroid is genetic and dogs that pass it on should not be bred. There is nothing more frustrating than buying a bitch only to find out that not only cant she conceive, she is hypothyroid and needs to be on meds for the rest of her life.

Yes I agree with that.  Beings how she did have 3 litters I will probably just get her spayed soon before she goes into heat again!  lol  At first I was very worried about Pyometra, because she kept coming into heat, but it has probably been about 2 months and no heat cycle, I was unsure if I would even want to attempt to breed her again.  But now, I don't think it is worth putting her through all of that, I will get her checked out by the vet though to see if we can figure out what is going on with her.  Thanks...
