Hi,
Been thinking about what to do next, since my many months late-night project is done (You all feel the speed increase, total remaking of the internals while keeping minimal changes to the look and feel)
I was wondering about translations,. I know that breeding is truly global enterprise, i.e. looking at it as a whole, no single country is dominating the niche.
Should I go for localization of the website. That means:
I would probably implement it as de.pedigreedatabase.com, es.pedigreedatabase.com and so forth and keeping www.pedigreedatabase as the English one.
So whats your opinion, would this splinter the current usage or make it more valuable. Considering that pedigree's and breeder information would be shared of course.

- Separate classifieds between languages
- Separate forums between languages
- Same pedigrees between all (and pictures of course)
- Same picture galleries,
- Same breeders
I would probably implement it as de.pedigreedatabase.com, es.pedigreedatabase.com and so forth and keeping www.pedigreedatabase as the English one.
It would mean a few weeks/months in removing any hard-coded text away and replacing it with a function that determines the current language and then asking for user language translation contribution. Meaning that each new language (that would have user support, guessing that to begin with, based on traffic, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Sweden, Norway , Denmark, Russia, and alot of the baltic states east European states. would start out in English and as contributors could help with the translation more from their countries would join the language specific areas.India is a big user, but they already have English as a state language and I really wouldn't know which language to pick, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu........
So whats your opinion, would this splinter the current usage or make it more valuable. Considering that pedigree's and breeder information would be shared of course.

Hi Oli,
I like the idea for one very selfish reason: it would (perhaps) allow me to practice skills in another language, while indulging my passion for dogs in general and gsds in particular.
So, I am all for a French and Spanish section and hope to be up for a Russian section in a year or so.

I'm sure it would be a valuable tool for many. And yes, I agree with Mystere, we might even learn something!

German and Czech for sure As far as India...I would find out from them what is the main language that the breeders that post use.JMO

That will most assuredly be my next project. But I probably will be doing the facebook method, of asking for translation contribution. I won't have the ability or the means to translate the text by myself. Thankfully it will probably be very few lines to get the basic layout translated and to get non-english speakers using it.
I know my Country and I know that the most knowledgeable people are the ones over 50 that really only speak Icelandic. (but can fillet a cod in 5 seconds and know the Icelandic horse inside out.).. I would like to get those aboard working with the pedigree information,

That would be great Oli. I can see my use of bablefish translation on the increase!
