Anybody here train these dogs? Where do their lines come from do you suppose? About time they used more of the dogs to help to save lives. Cultural sensibilities can be reasoned with, in good time.

This from the article: "Iraqi forces have been reluctant to expand the use of bomb-sniffing dogs until recently because of Muslim traditions that view dogs as unclean."
These poor dogs will be turned over to the Iraqi police. How will they be treated with that kind of prejudice against them? I wouldn't send a dog there under those circumstances. Better to work on robot sniffers that can't be abused or hurt or neglected.

I saw something about this a while back about some of the Afganistan people (I guess Muslims) not liking dogs and thinking that re dirtier then pigs. But then it showed a family that had got a GSD pup and loved it cause they realized that the dogs finding bombs and land mines made it safer for their children to play out side.(cause the dogs would find land mines) So they have turned around.I have also known a few Muslims that had dogs and took very good care of them and loved their dogs.If they thought so bad of them they would find some other means of finding bombs.

From what I understand from my friend, who is stationed over there, the military is using them as well and the K9 people are having a hard time getting the proper high nutrition food for the demands of working dogs to the dogs due to the current priority system for transporting items.
Interesting side note, my friend who was afraid of GSDs (due to being repeatedly bitten by poorly trained GSDs as a child when they got loose) loves them now due to my furry ambassadors.

Glad that your furry ambassadores changed your friends mind. I have been bit by some GSDs too and other breeds.Comes with the territory of being a dog trainer.I would never hold it against a breed but more so that one individule dog....or the owner for not raising it the right way!! lol

LAVK-9, my trainer friends agree with you. Both times I was bitten was by GSDs. Once a child (and fell in love with the breed), and the last was by my own. I was stupid and tried to break up a tussle that turned into a fight, talk about hyper speed! Wow! Learned my lesson. I could see the grooves on my radial bone from his canines on the x-ray. He could have broken my arm easily but stopped himself (never doubt a dog's intelligence, speed, strength, or self control again). He is very strong and is so hard on sleeves that my trainer has threatened to start charging me for sleeves. I was teased that now I am a real trainer since I have the scars.
Oops, I am guilty of hijacking a thread again. Sorry :0)

With my 2 males i had I could tell them "knock it off!!!" and they would the females....they were to the death fighting and i too was stupid and reached in to get them apart knowing that it wasn't the best idea. They were just 4 mo so I wasn't that worried.I have scars from it.Then again same thing but fence fighting...I grabed the one sister by the scruff and she turned and took it out on me.Talk about misplaced agression!! I was bleeding much more as she was a year by then.My male came in and grabed her and pinned her down as to say" you don't bite mom!!" It was very interesting.

Aren't bomb sniffing dogs trained different then SAR dogs?

by LAVK-9 on 10 February 2010 - 23:02
It is in the same lines as sent discrimination but yes they are trained differently.I can't remember how many sents they are trained to search for(it is alot though) but I am sure it is different from state to state and country.

Ours were always "passive find" trained and it was really interesting to watch and learn. Now the drug dogs are "passive find" trained as well since there were one too many incidents of destroyed drug hiding places.
We had a couple of bomb sniffing dogs that indicated on one of our fire engines where the buker gear was stored. We just come back from a multiple vehicle accident where the air bags had deployed, the ingredient used to blow the air bags was the same as a certian bomb ingredient. So glad they were "passive find" trained LOL.
