My friend's beagle was out in the snow and apparently his tail got jammed.  At first she said he was holding it down and crying, she didn't know what was wrong.  She lives upstairs, she called me up to take a look.  He's got a pretty good sized lump about 2" from the base but it's not bent at all.  He can't sit and is having trouble laying.  He's now started to hold it up and even wagging.  Doesn't flinch when you put pressure on it.  I don't have much experience with broken tails and am not sure if it is.  Any advice, suggestions appreciated.

Get it xrayed!! My GSD broke his tail and I thought I could splint it but got it xrayed and the vet said that if it is cutting off the nerves it could cause pain and the dog could end up chewing on it and cause more problems. It was towards the end of it so instead of spending tons of $$ to plate it...I had it amputated just at the break. If there isn't a break...maybe it just needs an adjustment and some anti infamatories.
Best of luck!!

Can't get to a vet today, roads not cleared.  I just can't understand why it doesn't seem to be painful when pressure is applied.  Also, can hold it up and wag, just when he puts full body weight on it does it seem to be a problem.  I'll let her know she should have x-rays done as soon as she can get out.  Thanks!

It is possible that it could just be jammed..like when you jam your thumb or finger and it hurts like hell but it isn't broken.Or since you say it is at the base maybe it is out of alighnment and a nerve is being pinched. Either way when able to would be good for a vet to check it.They might be able to manipulate it back in to place if that is the case.
Your welcome....hope all goes well. Also that the snow stops for you!!

Snow stopped and sun is shining!  At least the shovel-wide path I made on the sidewalk is still clear, just hope the sides don't collapse!  I still can't get to the back yard but it really is beautiful.

Thanks for the advice, again
