My sister has a German Shepherd that is in need of vet care.
She called me this morning and said that he was throwing up everything that he eats and has not had a BM. She took the dog to the vet and after $1000 in medical bills they think that the dog ate something like a sock. Whatever is is it can only be removed by surgery. She is in the Chicago area. The estimate for the procedures needed are about $2000 more.
She is not looking to get a procedure for free but if anyone knows of an organization that may do it at a reduced price, please pass along and information.

$1000 is a lot so far.
The dog needs help no matter what.
Shop around, all vets are not the same.
It's getting worst, here too. I end up going from one to another depending on what services I need.

Is there a School of Veterinary Medicine near you? Sometimes they have teaching grant money that can be applied to a bill. Its discretionary, usually the decision of the department heads, but if the case is interesting, a good opportunity to teach students,...
Good luck.

Have them check with Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago. They have a low cost veterinary clinic that regularly has students there from the University of Illinois Veterinary School. Animal Welfare League in the south suburbs of Chicago has a similar low cost vet clinic. (probably without the vet students though) You could also contact U of I Vet School in Champaign-Urbana. They are about 2-1/2 hours south of Chicago.
In Skokie, IL there is a very, nice caring, old school type of vet clinic called McCormick Animal Hospital. Dr. Roberts and his staff are very caring and are very reasonable on prices.
Best of Luck!!!

My sister's gsd is getting the operation today for a little less than $750 from the Animal Welfare League. My sister is VERY VERY grateful for all of your tips and general concern. In addition she has made a donation of food and money.

First thing out the door today to let out dogs ,,in the cold rain,,I found a sock toy so in the garbage it went...
for safety sake...
Puts the fear in ya when you read some of our threads and reminds us of what plastic, socks, even treats bought in stores, can do inside our dogs if they don'e CHEW them or if they get the wrong kind...
Germans are notorious for chewing on many foreign and strange objects.

Would not recommend Dr Rudowski for anything, yes he is cheaper but you get what you pay for. If I did not take my girl out of there when I did she would not be alive today.
