Neuer Monde Shepherds

Hi there everyone,

I have been kicking around the idea of a raw diet.  Was wondering if anyone here feeds a raw diet and can give me some pointers. Like how to start, how much to feed, and what types of meat or veggies and how to vary the meals.? How many times a day do you feed? Thanks for some input and advice on this. Just really looking for some thoughts here and maybe a little nudge to do it!
Thanks,
Shelby

And to further the questions;  how young can you start puppies on the raw, and can you feed females that are going to be bred or already bred the raw diet while pregnant, also while they are nursing puppies??  Thanks  Nanci

Vegies in Raw? bleeeee, dogs don't need it, so why do it? I would start witch chicken backs, its the single best way to start a dog on raw without the dog shitting his brains out. Join Yahoo raw feeding group, they are one source with the most info you can find, and a big group of people that been doing it for long time.

For everyone feeding raw, there is a different way to do it.  There are people that feed whole rabbits (fur and all) to people that feed part raw and part kibble, to folks that cook the whole mix in a crock pot or pressure cooker - although this defeats the raw diet idea.  A raw diet list or forum will help you get started. It may seem overwhelming at first.

For large breeds, my basic diet is chicken backs - I've found that they  are the best for my dogs and more available in my area. I don't use fruit or veggies. To the chx backs, I  add tripe, beef liver/chx organs 2-3x a week,  eggs (raw and hard boiled - with shell), salmon oil, kelp/alfalfa powder, vit E, vit C,  and every now and then, canned mackerel to the mix.

Adults and non-preg bitches I feed once per day.

I wean my puppies out on ground chicken necks & tripe, along with the other above ingredients. When the pups are fully weaned, I give chicken backs split in half, along with the other ingredients mixed into a mush. 3x day to start.

Feeding pregnant bitches is the same, but fed 2x day. I occasionally will offer her cooled, boiled milk, mixed with 2 raw eggs, a dash of salt and a tsp of honey wisked. I always give this boiled milk mixture right after whelping. And especially  for large litters, AFTER the pups are born, I supplement with Osteo-Form calcium-phosphorus tablets until the pups are weaned.

The main problem most raw feeders have is locating supply. In some areas, there are great co-op groups.

I have been doing raw, just sick of the commercial food hype.
And I am new at it but can give you good sites to ask questions and get answers. pm me and I can give those to you. There is some on yahoo, facebook and a dog site I am with.
let me know.
The yahoo group would be good for the one who wants to know how to read about puppies and raw. They have a group that is originally on yahoo part. good luck.
My dog loves it and I think she is better on raw.

I feed raw- 80% meat, 10% organ meat, 10% bone. My dogs are doing better on it than any kibble I've tried, but one still has allergies. I supplement with Salmon oil, Kelp, probiotics, digestive enzymes and I rotate various herbs such as Spirulina, Chlorella, Echinacea & White Thistle.  My dog had serious allergies when I got her and she has come along nicely since going on the raw diet, but still has room for improvement (it's been a year and half now). I went from 100% kibble to 100% raw overnight.  I give various proteins such as turkey, beef, pork, lamb, goat, rabbit and fish. Sometimes I add eggsor yogurt. I add a minimal amount of ground up veggies too (maybe a tablespoon or so, but it's probably not necessary. As others have mentioned there is a yahoo raw feeding group- that's where I got a wealth of info.

Oh, a word of warning- don't be surprised if your vet doesn't support this change in diet. Most are very much against it.  Good luck!

I feed raw and have been since 1998.  You'll find that feeding raw has so many advantages that once you have it down, most likely you wont go back. I also run a rescue so the rescue dogs go on raw when they come in. Dogs that have been on kibble most of their life dont really like the raw in the beginning (like one of the dogs I have now) and he still cracks me up when I give him something he isnt sure of. I feed all kinds of veggies and fruits along with a variety of meats and the dogs gets an occassional junkie like fries. Variety is the name of the game and I think it makes for a healthier dog. I do watch for calcium though because its needed and hard to supppliment.  If you want to PM me direct I can give you some tips. And I agree with the last post vets do NOT support owners on this diet. My vet, who I have to give credit to, does pretty well, but still is surprised when lab comes back on dogs that have been on raw and their results are good. When you opt for the raw diet its also a great way to learn about canine nutrition and all the crap thats in commercial bagged food. Try reading "Foods pets die for" by Ann Martin. Once you read it, its hard to go back.

That's funny B Haugh, I too have been feeding raw since 1998.  I started with chicken backs all the way through the neck.  And, I bought them cheap from Whole Foods and another Health Food store in San Francisco.  There was not too much competition for the supply.  Then there were more people doing it and it got competitive.  I started ordering to secure my supply.  I was feeding to very large GSDs.  Then, the stores caught on and increased their supply.  Enough for everyone.

My first two dogs were 5 and 2 when I switched them to raw.  Punky Boy Pharaoh started at eight weeks with commericially prepared mince and chicken or turkey that I ground.  I gave him whole chicken drumsticks at 11 weeks.  I get 1 pound chubs shipped frozen to my front door from  www.greentripe.com/.  I buy the excalibur which is a mix of green tripe, heart, organs and ground bone.

He is a lusty eater, he likes everything.  He will even enjoy some kibble if he can steal it from another dog's bowl.

Michele
