I wanted to name my kennel Von Hartwin but it is already taken. I want a german kennel name that suggests both brave or loyal and friend. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you

As owner of Von Hartwin Kennels I am flatterd.
Hartwin is a German surname meaning "Brave friend"  Pronounced: HAHRT-veen

A couple of literal translations are:

vom Tapferer Freund= of courageous friend
Haus des Tapferen Freunds= Home of the Brave Friend

I kind of like "Haus des Tapferen" Home of the brave.

You might try going to Babble Fish and playing around a bit with translations. I have not searched to see if these names are already in use. Good luck and let me know what you come up with.

Hi JoAnn,

your explanation caught my attention, so I went through a couple of dictionarys of mine. What I came up with is, that "Hartwin" is a first name, used in, so to speak , in the old days of Germany. It means, as you correctly pointed out, supposed to mean, if translated loosely, Brave friend. But I could not find anywhere something that would link the meaning to this name as 100% correct, it is one of those things where knowledge gets lost with time.

Dakota,
you have many choices to find a name. One would certainly be to use your Family name. My last name is Dresbach, so one choice for me could have been " vom Haus Dresbach".
Or you would choose a famous building or church that is well known in your area.
Or if you have a creek or river in your vacinity, like "vom Missouri River" or "vom Beaver Creek" (this would be translated : vom Biberfluss"
Or maybe you have an oak wood in your backyard, it could be " vom Oakwood" ( translated: "vom Eichenwald")

I personally like it if the kennel name has something to do with where you live, that`s why I choose "vom Sankt Martiner Tal". First, I do live in the village "Sankt Martin" and second, there is a nice valley, that is called Sankt Martiner Tal (Tal= valley), an area where I love to walk my dogs.
