What does the * by some dogs by KKL mean?

It means that the Kk is valid for "Lebenszeit" (for ever). That is to say that the dog has passed the wiederankoerung (2 yrs after his first exam) and his koerung exam stands now for life.

Actually Petros, that is not quite correct.
When you look at a pedigree (pink papers), you will see that the first two generations are thouroughly listed with alll their information. The "*" denotes that the dog is breed surveyed. Behind the *, some dogs are defined as "Lebenszeit" which means breed surveyed for life, and others have the years of the duration of their first time survey, i.e. 2004-05 printed on the paper. That does not mean that the dog is now not surveyed for life, it just publishes the status of the breed survey at the time of the issuance of the pedigree.
Past the first two generations, dogs which are breed surveyed are noted with the * in front of their registered names, which holds true anytime you see that, i.e. in show catalogs, on databases, result sheets, pedigrees etc.
