Hi all,
Just wanted to let you know that I made changes to the server infrastructure. All images are now served from a CDN (Content Distribution Network), which means that they now reside globally on multiple servers and when you initialy connect it determines which server is closest to you and serves you pictures from there.
Of course the basic web (text and data) is still from my server, (you need some single origin). But with html compression and such you should get the html fairly fast and the rest should stream from a server near you. Perhaps you notice faster loading of the images and stuff.
One drawback from this is that updated pictures could take a few hours to dtistribute all across the globe, having locations that will not see an updated picture right away.
I have also been spending the past months working on removing some extra javascript addons that I thought added to the site but instead where making each page bloated (language translation, tracking and such kindof tripled each pages size). I still need to keep the advertising. Hope you dont mind
,. Gotta get income to run this thing. (Icelandic bandwith costs are like 200x the cost of running a server in the states or the EU due to the big lake around us (Atlantic Ocean) .
So While I haven't been doing site application changes, I have been working on the server technology to make it speedier for everyone. (I will probably be switchng to the NGINX web server as a proxy frontend also in the future, been playing with that one and it does incredible things in terns of response time and load managing)
Regards
Oli

Oli,
Thank you first of all to your countrymen who are already on the ground in Haiti helping rescue people trapped in collapsed buildings.
Secondly, making anything here faster or better is always appreciated. Thank you.

Heh, no problem..
Hodie,
We have been dealing with earthquakes here since 900, we pride ourselves on having teams that repeatedly get the 1st spot at transatlantic trials (US + EU). Were used to finding people in ruins or snowfloods. We take a big pride in being good at it also. So we had a Boeing 747 full with our best people and 20tons of equipment taking off only 12 hours after the news came. (and they are all volunteers also, have a normal day job and do this as a hobby. Most of us do, even I spent 5 years volunteering in the rescue scouts in my town, mostly finding lost tourists on our glaciers.)
We are getting constant news from the team. Every time thay save people it's in all the news here. We are very proud of them..
