Hello,

I need your suggestions. I have a female she is nine months old. She was earlier having problems with her both ears as they were not standing. However after 2 months of regular taping etc one of her ear has stand fully but the other is still not. Kindly do advise what to do now. All of her Litter mate have normal standing ear. She is the grad daughter of  VA6 Nando Gollerweiher, VA4 Winona von Amur, Flipp Arlett

Both of her parents have normal standing ear too.

Looking forward for your advises.

Thanking you.

Best Regards.

It's not uncommon and perfectly normal to see an adult female gsd with only one erected ear. Infact, in my childhood i'd used to belief that's a sign of good-producer-female. This is bcos nearly all the "one-ear-erectus"females i'd known had been great producers.(. . .anyway, this is childhood superstition). Don't bother about 'taping' anymore, with her excellent pedigree, i think, it could be from the earlier ear problem she had. However, she'll have perfectly normal/erected ear pups. Stay cheered.

Dear NigerDeltamann,

Thanks for the comments. But i want also to put her in shows. Here there would be problem. Moreover I am not sure that they will pass this female in breed survey with one ear down. What do you say. Thanks. regards

Try this method:

If it were me I would keep gluing to get it to stand.

You may as well spay her and give her to someone who will love her. There is something wrong when a German Shepherds ears are not up by 9 months and require taping and gluing. We are not breeding Great Danes or Dobermans here, these are dogs whose ears should have no problem going up on their own. Please do not even think of breeding this female. There are enough problems in this breed and poor ears are just getting all too common.

Does she spend a lot of time crated?  I know this sounds weird, but in my experience if you're having trouble with ears the more time they spend crated the longer it takes for the ears to stand.  Also, offering things to chew on, like bones or a kong chew toy tends to strengthen face muscles and helps the ears stand in addition to the taping/glueing.

Has this dog had any digestive problems, soft stools or diarhhea?

What are her pasterns like, are they really upright or are they sloping down?

There can be malabsorption from those issues.  If that is an issue, I would have further comments on that.

The tendons under the jaw that go up to the ears have a lot to do with their uprightness and strength.

You can give her a raw chicken drumstick or chicken wing every day.  A knuckle bone from a cow, for enjoyable chewing.  In any case, do not give cooked bones, you could kill your dog.  Cooked bones get brittle and can splinter.

Good luck,

Michele

Dear Shepherdmom,

Thanks for your comments . Appreciate your time for helping me out. She spend around 20 hours in crtae our of 24 hours.

What do you recommend that how much time should i keep her out of crtae. She daily spend 1 and half hour in park off leach. Playing with ball and with my other dogs. She is very active over there and continuously run.

I am going to start giving her raw chicken from today. Hope it will help .

Thanking you once again.
