I have a working line shepard and she is ten months old. Starting four months ago she started barking when I left her alone in her kennel and while I am at work. She can bark ten hours nonstop. I train her both at morning and night but she still continues to bark everyday. The only time I can make her stop barking is when I put her back in her crate. But I don't want to leave her in the crate for such a long period of time. I've tried using a bark collar at the highest volumn, but she doesn't feel any shock and it doesn't seem to help.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You.

So, at 4 months old she's being crated for 10 hours?

Sorry, read it wrong,  so, she was 6 months old. How long is she being left in the crate?  I would not use a bark collar as I've heard they can get stuck and then continuallly shock the dog.  Which can then create more problems, obviously.

I would use positieve reinforcment.  Go in the crate for food, then go in the crate for a small amount of time w/treats and so on and so forthe, gradually increasing the time inbetween rewards.

when you walk towards the crate and the pup starts barking turn your back and walk a few steps away. when pup stops for a fraction of a second, turn around. when she starts barking again turn around and walk a few steps away. repeat process until you can let her out of the crate quietly.

never walk towards the crate when she is barking.

never let her out of her crate until after you've been home for a few minutes.

no need to say a word, no need to give treats.

This is the only thing that worked for Hero, It took about an hour the first time, by the end of 2 weeks he was cured.......now he is quiet.

What brand is your bark collar? I use Dogtra and it works very well. Also when you say she is in a kennel, do you mean a crate? If you mean a kennel (example 10x10) then I would get a "treat ball". You can find them at most petstores. I would put treats, her kibble, small chopped up carrots(if you are worried about her getting fat) in there during the day to keep her busy. That should help with the barking. Since usually they bark due to being bored. This would keep her busy for several hours.

Hope this helps.....and by the way it is SHEPHERD not Shepard...

I think the problem is that the dog barks in the kennel all day.  The dog is quiet in the crate, but the OP doesn't want to leave the dog in the crate for 10 hours a day.

Joe ollie Lynn,
if your puppy doesn't feel the bark collar perhaps the bark collar isn't tight enough, not charged or just a crappy model.  There are many bark collars for sale and most of them are junk.  It is worth the investment to get a really good one if you are going to use one.

if you bought the bark collar from petsmart those do not work  the yapper stopper by dogtra works on 99 percent of dogs though we almost never use it on the highest level ,it has to be placed under the chin as opposed to lower on the neck ,

Can I ask a stupid question, at 6 months old you started using a bark collar without first training with positive motivation to understanding not to bark.  Did this puppy take a hard correction in a kennel and not really knowing why this correction was happening. The collar is put on everytime this pup goes in the kennel and now is stressed ? The crate is a safe place and does not bark in the crate,  no stress? Was this behavior shaped? I am just curious on the thought proccess here.
Always,
Cee
