I was thinking about getting a puppy the breeder said that they lost the mother during whelp and that the pups are away from the mother he will ship at 6 weeks.  I live in a colder climate as does the breeder so it will probably be 0in the 20-30'sF.  Does anyone think that shipping a puppy at 6weeks who is away from its mother anyways is ok?

thanks
Kim

Being a breeder in the past of numerous litters over the years ...... if your breeder is willing to ship the pup at 6 wks I would not go as far as purchasing a pup from this person ........ by the way the way the airlines will not accept the pup under 8 weeks anyway unless your vet falsifies the shipping paperwork and must also make out a letter of acclimation to accomodate the colder temps !    Greg

This is a VERY BAD IDEA.  I agree with ALKSTER on this. Find another breeder. I don't know where you live, but in most places, it is illegal to send a pup away this early. Airlines would not accept the pup, it is too cold for a pup, and based on the fact that the mother was lost in whelp there is a very high risk that this pup has no immunity at all as it was unable to get colostrum from the mother. Any breeder who would suggest this is either an idiot or just wants to get rid of the pups as soon as possible.

No Airline will ship pups under 8 weeks!

I wouldn't ship a puppy until 1 week after its second vaccination.

first vaccine is at 6 weeks, second is at 9 weeks and one more week.

if someone want to come and get a pup, that's different, but still not  until at least 8 weeks

6 Weeks is too young to leave the litter pack. Also airlines have certain temperatures that they will refuse to ship. If this breeder wants to ship a 6 week old puppy I agree with the previous comment stay away from this breeder.

I have to agree with everyone else 6 weeks is a vital time for the puppy. It's when they really start playing with their littermates and learn some valuable lessons from each other. Unless you plan on picking the puppy up from the breeder  no airline will ship a puppy until 8 weeks like Firefly said.

Seeing how the "breeder" is willing to let a puppy leave before 8 weeks Your best bet is to look else where for a puppy.

I agree, find a different breeder. Shame on them. What were they going to do to get the pup on the plane, lie about the age?

Ditto to all of the above.  Most pups are weaned and away from the mother by 6 wks.  However reputable breeders will not let them go until 8 wks because there is alot of important socialization that happens with the littermates between 6 & 8 wks.  And no airline will ship a pup under 8 wks so either this breeder has never shipped before or he's willing to lie about the age.
