I want to take my 1 year old female to some shows this spring/summer but her coat is not as nice as most of the dogs pictured here. Mainly her tail-its very scraggly. Is there any regimine I can begin to help her coat get in top condition. I feed her a good food but no additives-should I add oil or something and if so what kind and how much? Also should I use some type of coat conditioner? Thank you!!

When i brush my babies,I always use any serem for frizzy ends which you can get in any pharmacy, just spray onto your hands and rub you hands wherever you feel the coat needs it,it also gives the coat a lovely shine,It does not interfere with the natural coat oils,My girl looks very glam when she is done.

What are you feeding? I know a lot of people still think Pedigree is good food so...just checking :)
Your dog may have an allergy if her coat is poor so you may want to try something else. You can also add salmon oil to her food, there are several different types...I use the liquid, I think it'd Grizzly but I would have to check. If your dog's diet is lacking in omega-3's the salmon oil should help.

I have a dog right now that I took in that has a horrible coat. I swear by raw for beautiful coats. I havent found anything better. Be careful of the salmon oil and only add a small amount in the beginning. I never could get good stools with the oil when I added it to the food.
Commercial dog food just doesnt have the nutrients needed to get nice coats imo. I suppliment with Evening Primrose and Very Green from Trader Joes along with raw refrigerated bee pollin. The B vitamins are the coat vitamins so you can add a B complex to the food when you feed. If your going to wash the coat try and use a mild higher end product (ie Redkin) that wont strip the oils from the skin. When dogs are in show coat I also used a good human conditioner or hot oil treatment
If there are patches of dry skin, like this dog I took in is a scratching fool, I use coconut oil on the spot along with some tea tree oil to keep him from licking it off. That has worked really well. Since this dog has been with me, the patches of bare skin have filled in quite nicely. I monitor the areas that seem like hes itching and apply my coconut oil/tea tree oil to the area. He has been with me for 3 weeks and is coming along nicely.
The raw will take about 2 months or so before you see any dramatic results. Ive never gotten the same results with any commercial dog food and Ive tried just about all of them.
Good luck.

sometimes they have a thyroid issue if they have a dull dry coat.

Many show lines dogs only have the color they have because the owners dye their dogs fur. You just need the correct color of dye.
What is the best color of hair/fur die?

IF your dog's tail is scraggly, chances are she's been chewing on it. Make sure you keep all fleas and other biting insects under control, so the hair can grow back. SOme dogs get problems with impacted anal glands, too, which causes them to chew the area around the base of the tail. If that's part of the problem, get a vet to show you how to empty the glands. It's not difficult to do.
Dying a dog's fur is not legal, and will get you tossed out of the show ring, and suspended from showing your dogs, possibly for life. You want to take that risk?
