Hi, As a dog lover and owner of many hunting breeds. I now find myself living in Az. Senior community with my little ( 47lbs) lasa-shitzu cocker mix. We are both still grieving the loss of our beloved Golden girl Sadie. 13 yr old Retriever.
about a month ago.At any rate as I've read through alot of postings I do see a great many concerns Re: itching ,ear infections ( yeast) etc. I am just in the process of starting treatment of Reggie my mix breed.
for what I hope is an overgrowth of Candida and nothing more serious ie. Valley fever., which is not uncommon in Arizona for Dogs as well as humans to contract. ( Vet will do bloodwork to rule out Valley fever.).
Assuming that wer're simply dealing with ( Candida ) yeast overgrowth. I will take a two stage approach in treating him
and I hope this info will be helpful. We will put Reggie on Fluconozole ( Pill form) a little more costly than some similar meds but with fewer side affects and more comprehensive in eliminating the existing overgrowth of Candida.
However and more importantly is a change in his diet. Why, because after extensive study I am convinced that what he is now eating is the primairy cause of the yeast overgrowth. That being dry food containing grain.Remembering that he is by nature a meat eater, if you would permit me to say a predator, and not a grazing animal .The comsumption of grains that turn to gluten are the cause of his yeast problems. I have a couple of choices , I have found several dog food manufactures that sell GRAIN FREE dry food. ( And some that advertise gluten free but are not. ( They contain oatmeal or barley. Or I can go to a homemade food program based on , yes raw foods. ( best diet I've found is outlined in
Natural nutrician for dogs and cats, the ultimate diet. ) The dry foods grain free are as example Innova Evo, Canidae Brand, A taste of the wild to name a few. My choice will be to go to the raw food diet. Its certanily not as easy as the dry food . But I can make a weeks art a time and freeze. i will post again in a few weeks and advise how he's doing. I post this because of my love for dogs. I'll sign off with this thought.

Hope it works. This candida thing is so common...make sure you give the dot NO sweets or fruit or forbidden grains. I have been using Nzymes with a certain amount of success. And raw food, of course.

Just remember. kibble cannot exist without something to "glue" it together.
Grain free kibble has simple starches in it, usually potato. Yeast lives on simple starches and sugar.
Many people recommend a spoonful of apple cider vinegar in the water or in the food.
A weak cider solution can be used as a rinse.
I feed raw food too.
Good luck
