This week (about 7 consecutive days) I’ve been trying to help some people (dog/agitation/square table) in NC. They’re nice people, committed to doing bite the right way. But I learned something powerful.
I made many suggestions, and even ridiculed some of the most obvious errors which are contained in 9 or 10 videos sent to me by these nice folks in NC.
And then I called Gene. And I realized – I completely overlooked so many obvious points, totally failed to communicate the subtle problems which both the handler and helper were creating, and – I also realized (again) …. Nobody on earth can read a dog like Gene England.
The internet – even with videos and phone calls – doesn’t even come close to proper and correct helper work. It doesn’t touch proper handler actions, and – no matter how I might “try” – there’s simply too much detail to help another to recognize, change the patterns slightly, rebuild the thinking process, and work the dog PROPERLY. I really tried – and I know I failed in many ways. Gene watched about 40 seconds of one of the videos, and located about 75 errors – I had caught some …. Gene caught them all. (And if you’re wondering or curious – Gene does NOT do this. He’s busy enough with his own life not to waste time looking at a video and giving suggestions/corrections.)
So – I’ve said this before, and I’m saying it again. Gene England is probably 1/8” from being a certified genius with dogs. He’s getting older, he no longer does the seminar thing like he did in the 80s and 90s, and he’s – WITH NO QUESTION – becoming more knowledgeable every month. We talk nearly every day, and he’s opened my eyes to (dog/training) things which we never spoke about back in the 80s.
If it’s possible in any way – PLEASE go to Gene’s seminars. I’m not getting a bonus or percentage by writing this – I’m being realistic and truthful: the day is coming when there will BE no opportunity to learn from Gene. I can’t emphasize it strongly enough – GET IT WHILE YOU CAN.

I have heard many good things about Mr. England. I have also been told many people have the table training wrong. Its about the subtleties, reading the dog and teaching it how to win. Even though I will never develop skills well enough to do this type of training I think it could help in reading the dog in bite work on the field.
Where can you find a list of seminars?
