when is it time to put an old, sick dog to sleep?
its something I've been struggling with for a few months now -

when she is no longer interested in the things she used to do?
when she no longer wants to go on walks?
when she no longer finds pleasure in life?
when she can no longer tolerate any more pain meds?
when she can no longer get up the stairs?
when she can no longer go outside to pee and poop?
when she cries out in pain while trying to get up?

I know many people out there have had do deal with this situation, please tell what was the final answer?

Youll know...

I think once they begin suffering, its time.
I feel for you.
Last dog I did was our 16 yr old German Shorthair Pointer, had cancer in the stomach, stopped eating.

Before her, our Family member and greatest GSD bitch that ever lived, at 13.
What a great dog, she did everything for us and with us

Mattie has athritis from head to tail......and her stomach has become so weak from all the pain meds she been on for so many years.

I try not to wait that long, I try and want to remember each and every one as a young and healthy dog or bitch, I want them to be able to walk into the vet's office and I stay and hold them until the end.  I don't want to remember their last days suffering and debilitated and in pain and not eating.  No that is not for me or them.  They mean too much to me;  now if I could figure out what to do with my almost 90 year old mother-in-law??  Complaining, and miserable...and wanting to die, I know that I will always make that decision for my dogs, because I love them that much.  Nanci

PS:  Age has nothing to do with it.

SitasMom, I don't know if what you describe in your post is hypothetical, or whether it describes your dog's situation at the moment.

If your dog has reached the point you described, it is time.

I think it is already PAST the time when I would have had it done. Once they are crying out in pain, and you can't do anything about it, as they can't tolerate any more pain medication, I think euthanasia is the kindest, best thing you can do for them.

I knew he was done when he wouldn't put his ears up anymore. And he wasn't old.

When their quality , and dignity of life, is no longer there. When they look at you as if to say "HELP ME". When the light in their eye is gone, and they look at you but ...they are looking through you to a place that is somewhere else.
They really do not want to leave us, but these German Shepherds are so stoic... they could be at deaths door, but hang on for us.
I had to make that decision a little over a year ago...it never gets, easier!

yes its somewhat hypothetical - but not for long.

at this point she is having trouble going up the stairs, not very interested in walks and is starting to have trouble with pain meds. every time i sit down she lays down by my feet - flat on her side. this is not like her. she just lays there not moving much. she still to comes to eat, she still wants to be petted but i don't know for how much longer. the other dogs ignor her - except the puppy which i protect her from.

i am begining the internal struggle and am dreading it completely.....she is my rescue aussie - she's been with me for 12 years - i love her and want to do right by her. the time is coming soon.
