I am a professional dog groomer and if you only have one dog who needs to be shaved down, you can get a cheap pair of clippers anywhere (Walmart, Petsmart). Probably right around $20- $30. There are also cooling lubricant sprays that will keep the blade nice and cool.
I definitely wouldn't recommend cutting the mats out with scissors.
good luck getting him a new home!
If you need any help don't hesitate to ask :-)

Thank you for the suggestion. Actually, I have tried the suggestion you made and the clippers are simply not good enough. This is a dog who I have had now for almost three years. He was "dropped off" here late at night and had I not kept him, the blizzard the next day surely would have killed him. I just never had the heart to send him to the shelter and of course, no one was looking for him. He is older and no trouble except he is trouble in the grooming area and I just cannot do it anymore with the scissors.
Thank you for responding. I will hope someone has a really good clipper. The really good ones I know are terribly expensive.

Can't afford that now, but will keep it in mind for when I can. And thanks again to you and Stacy for the suggestion.

Kool Blade gets you thru but most people have never had full heavy show cockers to contend wih....

Bunco has inbetween but much thicker than Maggie his sister...So it depends on the dog , as to how the clippers act..Andis is used by most professionals today....I use Andis blades in my Oster heavy duty clippers but have never been able to even get a cheaper pair even half way down the back on my cockers..Matted forget even the attempt. I dropped my newest Oster clippers on the kitchen floor and now they are unbalanced..Off to Oster to get repaired ..always something...

If you have anyone near you that has sheep Sunbeam made a pair of Sheep shears ...and they work..For years I had a pair and some crook I knew stole them and took them to the flea market in Conroe and sold them.....I was so furious as they work and have one strong motor to get all that thick matting off.. in a hurry and not get so hot....
Maybe the Feed store has a pair of Sheep shears you could borrow or know someone with a pair..
Thanks Sitasmom..they are hard to keep pretty and the hair is thicker than sheep hair....I have always tried to keep them in good condition but several times did not and I was beside myself to get it off...My back and my arms and the poor cockers were worn out when I finally get them sheared down...I keep them short now..

Hodie,
Send me your address and I will send you an Osters A5, extra, I have, and a #10 blade, just sharpened...I have about 3 or 4 of them. It may need brushes and springs shortly, but those are easy to get done, they will work for the one dog.....I used to be a dog groomer and have some extras laying around...they are older but will still work...I do use them on occasion on some of these long coats I have to shave down like the Chewy dog and my horses bridlepaths....
