One of my dogs just suffered some Liver infection and he has stopped taking Royal Canin. I have been always feeding him RC. He has recovered and better now.

The vet has suggested he be given non fat diet. WHat Can I give him? He is 9 years old.  I have been giving him human grade chicken pieces in a stew with fat removed. Also Yogurt and eggs with shells

Kindly Guide

regards

Vikram,

You did not mention the cause of the liver infection. Normally a dog with an infection will get better and do well. Why did your vet suggest non-fat diet? What else does he think is going on?

The diet you are feeding will be low in fat, but may be expensive. On the other hand, whether you can get non-fat foods in your country is a question. And really, I would want to be sure about this because no fat is not a very health diet for dogs, even those who need less, need some fat in their diet, just as in humans.

Can you provide additional information?

also he has lack of physical exercise. Not much just basic ball playing

Cholesterol levels have little/nothing to do with infection. Do you really mean infection? And even so, non-fat is not the answer if such levels are high. And eggs are generally regarded as high in cholesterol......The picture you are providing is not clear......

this is all there is to the picture. I do not have his blood report with me right now. He was also on the drip for few days. Some basic vitamins etc. Is chicken boiled in stew under pressure a  good enough diet?

cheers

 Vikram,

The diet must be balanced. Chicken alone is not going to be a balanced diet. When you get your blood test results, perhaps we can help more. And I forget where you live, so that might help too.

It is good the dog is better. Good luck.

He needs bone, fat and protein ,,but less of the fat...about  5 % at least...He does need a diet but he needs some veggie juices in his chicken and some bone..give him chicken wings and necks  raw not cooked...cook the chicken if you want but give him the wings and the necks raw.

garlic and olive oil on his meat and a little bit of krill oil , or salmon oil  every other day ...

I have a rottie with the similar issues, I have to have him on the medical Purina health dry and 1/4 can of the wet. Get it at the vets. I about fell over when he told me Purina. I tried it and he has been doing better and not throwing up all the time. I am seeing more fat in the food than what is stated on the bags. I can tell by feeding him, he will not tolerate it anymore. My vet bills have gone down considerably since he has been eating this.
