I kept thinking I was going to get another litter, too. But 3 breedings didn't take. She did not have any discharge, she just wasn't working inside. I'm glad I got rid of the damn uterus before she actually got sick.

My five year old bitch did the same thing; was having seasons at 4-5 month intervals (all her life) and finally a pyometra arrived, we treated and treated but still kept coming back. Finally I demanded a culture and sensitivity and low and behold; it was some kind of bacteria that we were not even touching with the antibiotics she had been on and she had to go in for shots of genticin and one other for a couple of weeks (mind you this was after the treatment for pyometra which is extremely expensive) and yes, she finally did have a litter about 6-7 years old, but couldn't deliver normally and had to have an emergency C-section to save puppies. The treatment is extemely hard on the bitches, only sometimes works and destroys the uterus in the process. So there you have it. That was my experience, now the bitch is spayed and 11 years old, but I do know of bitches that have died from pyrometra so don't hesitate to get treatment or spay. My vet at the time just wanted me to spay this bitch, a very showy, champion at that and I co-owned her at the time and the co owner wanted her to have another litter, otherwise I WOULD have just spayed her. Hope this experience helps you. Nanci

You may be able to save the uterus and get one more litter out of her (see my story about my pup's mom) but it will be RISKY AND EXPENSIVE.
There are 2 kinds of pyometra: open and closed. With open, the secretions drain, and there is a chance of treating it. With closed, the pus stays inside the uterus, which can become very large and swollen. If it ruptures, and the pus leaks into the abominal cavity, your bitch could die.
With a 7 year old bitch, I'd be more likely to spay her than with a younger bitch.

Get a second opinion, find a vet you are confident in......find a reproduction specialist if you need to.

We have done 2 rounds of this now...at over $150 for each visit and prescription!
I really think she (Vet) is a Moron and I reserve judgement on alot of people.
She is condescending and knows shiite about hunting dogs, or treating illness.
I have to wonder about Medical schools these days...never mind, nuther topic.
Discharge was heavy, small amounts of blood, then lightened over a next week,to light milky mucous, lately theres very little.
Bitch is in fine condition, run twice daily..
Thanks for the replies.
