The National Monument site's news release, pictures of the dog.  This scumbag needs more than prison time, what a shame.  I really feel for the owners, I don't know how you'd get over this one.

OK, here is your chance to make a difference.  I emailed the gentleman Paul Shockley who wrote the article about this horrific act.  Here is what I wrote and the response I got.

Dear Sir,

I live in Wichita Ks. and found this story on a dog website that I frequent. To say I am sickened doesn't come close to describing how I feel. Is there an email address you can share with me so that I may contact the court or judge or county atty. about my feelings on this. I'm sure I can have responses from all over the world sent directly to the court in the hopes they throw the book at this despicable excuse for a human being. I only wish they could tie this crime to some other charge with a more severe penalty. This man deserves to be locked up forever because we know in our hearts if he can do this to a dog he will graduate to humans.

I would appreciate it if you are able to provide me with contact information as listed.

Thank you and most sincerely,

Deb Morgan

The prosecuting U.S. attorney is Michelle Heldmyer, nice woman.
Her email: michelle.heldmyer@usdoj.gov

if it doesn't work, let me know.

regards,

paul

I have already sent my letter as follows:

To: michelle.heldmyer@usdoj.gov
Dear Michelle,

I asked for and received your email address from Mr. Paul Shockley so that I could contact you about the despicable Steven Clay Romero.

I know that we are all considered innocent until proven guilty. That being said, I hope you are able to nail this miserable excuse for a human being.

I am begging you to hit him with every possible charge you can find related to and including the obvious act of animal cruelty. Can you not get him also for the theft of the animal? What about breaking and entering? Burglary? Would kidnapping be considered? Is there not some law he broke by committing this act in a National Park?

What I am trying to convey here is how important I think it is that he be put away for the absolute longest period of time possible. Someone who would do such a horrible thing to a trusting, helpless animal will eventually turn on the Human Race.

I'm going to share your email address with friends on a website in the hopes you get enough letters and comments about this to present them to the judge in bulk. Perhaps a landslide of such heartfelt outrage will sway the judge to order the maximum penalty that is allowed on each charge, should the defendant be found guilty.

Thank you for your time.
Most Sincerely,

Deb Morgan

What are you waiting for?  Let her know how you feel!  Let's avenge this dog!

Two Moons said: "Sam, whose gonna pay for keeping all those people in cages you?"

I wouldn't if I had a choice. I volunteered for the firing squad, if you'll read my post correctly. As it is, all taxpayers will pay for caging this POS if he goes to federal prison.  You posted your first posts on this topic without having any information about the circumstances of the dog's death, which were readily available had you chosen to exert yourself to search.  Hodie provided enough information and I followed up on reading the circumstances before I posted my first post to this topic.

Oh why do I even bother to check in here occasionally?  Some people are hopeless.

DebiSue, I'm sending my email off.  Those photos of poor Buddy are heartbreaking.

Thanks Sam.

If everyone who commented on this thread or even better, all who read it would take a moment to send an email I'm sure it would help to put this POS away for the max.  Those photos of Buddy are so very painful to view but everyone should take a look it that's what it takes to make your blood boil and get you to send an email!

As a criminal prosecutor that just finished a large animal cruelty case (involving over 200 dogs) that got quite a bit of media coverage, I can honestly say that inundating the prosecutor's email inbox with calls for a maximum sentence often does little more than clog up the prosecutor's inbox.  Believe me, the prosecutor is aware of how people feel about these sort of cases.

My recommendation is for *one* person to email the prosecutor and ask if there is an appropriate time for letters to be written to the court regarding a potential sentencing in this matter.  With that said, often times the court will not review letters from those not involved in the case so the prosecutor might tell you that.  That was the situation in my case and while I know that the people who wrote, emailed, and called me meant well, all it did was take time away from me actually preparing the case.

Just some food for thought ;-)

Psycht,

I actually gave this some thought for the very reasons you listed before I posted this.  I know the prosecutor knows how we feel.  I want her to have it so the judge knows how we feel.  So many times a prosecutor beats his breast and wails of the injustice only to have the judge poo poo it.  If I hadn't read about it on this site I never would have heard about it...so much for the media coverage.  If nothing more is said in court other than "I have received over 1000 emails requesting the max" my job is done.  I can only do so much but I will do what I can.  Also, all the the prosecutor had to do was reply to my email saying that she would rather I not go on this crusade for the very reasons you mention and it would have stopped with my one email.  As it is, I have had no response one way or the other.  Maybe she hasn't had the chance to read it.  In which case she should be very surprised on Monday morning.

I appreciate your comments!
Deb
