Molly, if you look at the 2nd photo the OP posted, there are also LIGHT sables in that litter. Odd!

I've always been curious about this....

This dog, Carly: castlebrookshepherds.net/Carly.html

She is a littermate to my working line dog (in my avatar pic): www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/401054.html
You can see my dog is a lighter, patterned sable.  Both parents were sables, but the dog Carly above looks more black and tan (the other littermates I have seen are sables).  Carly was bred with a sable male but some of her puppies look black and tan: castlebrookshepherds.net/Viho.html

Thank you Molly! I thought it had to be dominant somehow...

Sitasmom will be right she's always sure when it comes to colours!!! Utter nonsense as usual, the puppy is obviously a sable, neither parent are sables. Go for it hardly abusive, truthful? Definately!!!

Glad you posted this topic Micheleambernick :-)
I'm pretty new to GSDs and I have been trying to study color genetics but I am dense so I have to read and re read for it to sink in. And I'm still having a hard time with it.
Anyway good luck with your new puppy! Looking forward to seeing pictures as he grows

Glad you put this new picture up of the sable mum and her puppies and your puppy looks like he will be dark. Kinda throws Sitasmom's analysis right out the window.....as usual lol.

I do remember the thread about sables when some people thought our showlines were not sable, but I am very familiar with sables and that female is definitely not one.  If this really is the mother, the male shown is not the Dad!

The dark pup is going to be a dark sable--but predicting the color of the tan/brown parts is difficult. It probably won't be biscuit-tan (because that dam has plenty of pigment), but the depth of red, I can't make the call from any of the pictures.

I've had some people say that the grey-brown-tan will be what turns very red in the adult, but I'd be curious to hear from someone who has bred the very red showlines and seen the adult coloration.
