Maggie, think of it this way, would you want to eat that grease? No, so don't give it to your dog. The raw feeding folk probably think you are crazy nuking the hamburger, is my guess. I think adding water for flavor is crazy, in that case, I would add a bit of garlic. I had a dog who experienced epidsodes of pancreatitis, I wish I knew more about it then, I would feed him fatty table scraps (bacon! all the time...BAD!) In the end he died of a tumor at 14 1/2 years old, (around the time of the dog food contaminations) so I'll never know if that had anything to do with his final days.

Oh, I know the "raw feeding" people will think it is crazy. Since I do nuke it some (not to the extent that it is completely cooked) and some grease comes out, what is the difference if he ate it raw? He would still be eating the fat -- but in a solid form. Right ??

The only differences I can theorize on being different is: 1. Liquid fat hits the system too fast and pure compared to solid fat. 2. The faster digestive system of a dog can handle the solid fats better in a way that does not tax the pancreas and endocrine system. Therefore solid fats take longer to digest and are eliminated quicker than liquid fats which are absorbed. Which ends up being better for the health of the dog? I'm not a nutritionist or expert and I'm really just making this up. My original advice still holds, if you don't want to eat the fat, don't feed it to your dog. Also, the raw feeders do not recommend a hodge-podge approach and have supplements and strict ideas for proper raw feeding for health. What you are doing is really just an incredible treat to your dog...
lol,,,IMHO

I am having a similar problem with my rottie. I use TOTW. I had to quit using the fish and go to the higher protein meat. I also use a 1/4 can of the holistic lamb and rice by Eagle . He is tolerating that well.

Pancreatitis doesn't really go away in many cases -- sorry. You probably need to persist with a very careful diet for the rest of your 10yo's life. If you are lucky, he may live a few years on a low fat, low protein, careful diet.

Well, a bland diet is a small price to pay for a healthy system. :-)
