Prager

For someone to tell you this is too much or it is not is out of place .
The cheapest pups are in a county dog shelter. But do you want such pup.
I'll always say that dog or anything is worth what anybody is willing to pay for it. But how do you know what you want to pay.  How much you want to pay for what is a personal decision based on your makeup and means. Nobody can tell you that and in long run nobody will be able to tell you how much to pay. It will be your decision. If you can not make that decision then you are not ready to buy a dog.
Here is what I would do if I would be you.
1. first learn the differences in GSDs (Show, work, sport, crap.)
2.Learn about hips and temperament
3. decide what you want.
4.look for breeder who has it.
5. Do not treat the breeder like a drive through clerk in Mac Ducks. Ask him for help. Use that word.
I have written on this here. I think it will help if you read it. The topic is P.T.Barnum>
http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/349104.html

6. By then, if you do all this, you will know how much such pup costs. And you will know if you want to pay this or that price.

SitasMom

"I would guess that the $800 puppy it might be a great pet, might not make it as a top quality working dog.........."

This statement is very misleading and I would not pay any attention to it!

Whatever Hans said... makes sence

And for the OT: take your time to purchase a puppy. Talk to people. I am glad that you asked. That is a good start!
Good luck with your search

I agree with GSDPACK-Sitasmom's statement is specious. Frankly, some of the very best puppies have actually been free to the handlers.

Wow thanks for all the replies and PMs. I wasn't expecting so many. i think i will stay away from this breeder because it does very much sound like he's just putting dogs together and the whole thing that he hasn't bothered to get official hip ratings even though he is on his second litter.

i also wanted to say thankyou for the kennels to look at and the thread about newbie puppy buying. i will admit that this would be my first big-purchase dog from an official breeder, so i want to do things right.

Can someone tell me more about hips changing as the puppy grows or have suggestions on websites I could read?

Stryker, aka "robo dog" was an AKC german shepherd from a litter I saw in a newspaper. He was from a backyard breeder, but I didn't know it at the time because i was stupid and thought that an AKC registration meant something. he was a good dog, but his hips were totalled by the time he was three.

Steph, It is disgraceful. You have every right to be frustrated and fed up. Thank you for all your efforts, but I agree with Hodie: do NOT forget to take care of YOURSELF, too. Happy Holidays!

by VomMarischal on 20 December 2009 - 00:12

I second what Mystere said. Happy Holidays and take a few hours for yourself. You deserve it after all your hard work.
