Fhtracker,
What do you want to do with your dog? What are your goals with this dog? Just so we are all clear.

In my opinion scentwork comes natural for a large majority of hounds. Some need a little direction to get them started, but good to go afterwards. I'm a firm believer that dogs bred to do a certain job for years are born with the natural instinct to perform the job they were bred to do. As with anything, it's not 100% but some have the natural ability. With hounds,I don't think there's a lack of prey drive, the prey drive is hidden to some degree or disguised as tracking, it's actually prey drive that keeps the hound on the track, the prey drive becomes evident when the prey is spotted or treed. The desire to catch and kill the prey is quite obvious at this point in the game.
To address the original op, your dog has food drive, the food is the reason he works the track. Maybe if you do as SlamDunc suggested and make it more fun for the dog the results will improve.Another thought, if your tracking the dog and he is filling up on bait he's not likely to be very enthusiastic about doing obedience for food,it's much easier to track and eat then be obedient and earn it.Work the dog when he's hungry.

Michael,
I didnt say there was a lack of prey- I simply said it hasnt been channeled into an object to play with as a reward.
Know what I mean?

Yoshy, sorry I misunderstood what you were saying. Your question is a very good one and in all honesty, I don't know that there is a way to channel the prey drive into any object. If anything I would think it would have to be something with a scent that captures the dogs interest.I have limited experience with hounds, mostly hunting dogs and they seem for the most part to be self motivated.
