Mindhunt

ShadyLady,  I remember those spotted evil Einsteins , they are great dogs but you are right, definitely not for beginners.

I thought I might have had it backwards, I couldn't remember, I just knew each one had a specific job.  My brother had more fun watching the dogs work then he had getting the boar (he never was big into hunting, just loved dogs and outdoors).

MindHunt, exactly  they can be totally evil!  If they want to get somewhere or out of someplace, they will find a way, regardless of pain and damage to their body! So driven! We had to be smarter than the Catahoula, which wasn't always the case.

But they are generally soft dogs in training (thank god). The bonus is that they retain their experiences extremely well. This is good if you are being fair in training, not if you dig yourself a hole as you'll not easily climb out. ;-)  And not so good if they learn any sort of clever, wiley, feral trick to escape or get to some object.

Man they were a stressful breed at times, but so, so cool at the same time. A real challenge.

I know there are some feral hogs around me here in southern Missouri.  Perhaps  I will get in on one of those hunts someday.

Last year, I rescued a Catahoula.  I love the dog.  He is soft in training as mentioned and always eager to twork.  He wants to do more than I do.  I have read they can be stubborn, and he does offer some balkiness at times.  But I think of it as being like a mule.  They are not dumb and have to understand what's in it for them and how it works first. Once over the hump, the dog's performance is nice.  So fast and agile and able to be very correct.  Never dreamed I would fall in love with a such a dog and he looks odd among the GSDs but what a driven, devoted and intelligent creature.

In the Ozarks, guess I would end up with  hillbilly dog someday!  Addicted now.

I think that some people refer to them as stubborn, but as you put it Samba, it's more about what is in it for them. They aren't a mindless dog that will do anything without thinking it through first.

Yeah, I guess being in the Ozarks, it was only a matter of time for you. haha. Good luck with him.

My one friend that goes hog hunting (and might come out to AZ for javalina, why I don't know cause from what I heard taste like crap) he would go to N Carolina to hunt.He had some baying dogs of different houndy breeds and then his American Bulldogs. He has some super bully dogs.
