He looks awfully wolfish to my eye. Are you sure he's a full blooded GSD?

by hodie on 23 February 2010 - 03:02

 Steph,

Is this dog housebroken? Is he a barker? Does he have any obedience at all? And how does he do around people? I have a man looking for a large male. He had a GSD for a long time that has now passed on. But the catch is that he lives in a townhome without any yard. He goes with the dog, outside, and the dog goes most places with him. He does have a garage as well to leave him in, but it would be a bit dicey if the dog did not work out because he would then be here and I probably could not take him unless something dramatic changes. Also, I don't know if the man would even consider him, but if you can fill me in on more information, I might pass the information along, just to see.

Regards.

Hey Sharyn,
He is great with people, at the shelter he went for a 4 mile run with someone, but then came back and greeted everyone. Per the shelter manager....

He is totally obedience trained, he is great on leash, he doesn't pull me at all, he does have some separation anxiety at this time, he spent 38 days in the shelter and was starting to go stir crazy, trying to get out of the kennel, etc.. He would just need to be on leash while outside if no yard. He is a big male, I will measure him tomorrow...I see a more standoffish side of him right now...I think because of the change. He is eating and drinking well though...

He is housebroke, he has not barked but once here when my stallion challenged him across the fence..he loves to go for rides in my pickup. Does not do well left alone right now, but he is not barking for attention...I have had to put him in my outside kennel at this time, because of the dog aggression. I will take my other dogs and start to desensitize him, by walking them by the kennel. It is 12 x 24...with 2 dog houses in it...which usually works...

Let me know, He is gorgeous, but I just cannot handle the dog aggression right now with that large of a dog. I have a 2 yr old, female Mali, gorgeous sweet fawn sable, in right now that is fearful and very dog aggressive that I am working on...
Thanks,Steph  Lola and her dinosaur....

 Hi Steph,

Thanks for the information. My concern would then be the anxiety issue. I don't think he would be left alone often or for long, but as you know, sometimes it is impossible to take a dog somewhere. The man is a very strong man, so I don't think the size is an issue and I can help him if he is willing to drive down. So I will send him an email if you can send me a photo of the dog. As I said, I have no idea whether he would take the dog. I think he prefers one who is not a puppy, but not so old. But it is worth asking him.

Take care and be careful so you don't have a fight on your hands. You don't need to be injured trying to break up a fight.

Regards.

Handsome boy, Steph..Very handsome.  I hope you find him a good home soon.

I can't have a dog aggressive dog here, so I can't offer that, but I do hope you find him the best!

He is a good looking boy for sure.

I will ask around here. The dog aggression thing might not be so pronounced with a strong, dominant male handler. Just please be careful, don't let yourself get i the middle of a dog fight, like Hodie mentioned.

Krazy Bout K9s

by Krazy Bout K9s on 24 February 2010 - 02:02

Well, this guy is in solitare confinement outside now, he does know his basic obedience, sit, down, come, stay, heel, catch for food throwing. He does settle down and minds while another dog is close, somewhat...I just really am not strong enough still to handle him at this time...I brought Adis, my rescue, retired police K-9 that I can handle totally, near the kennel to desensitize him and Stuka, went ballistic...Adis knows what Fuey means and didn't provoke him, so Stuka finally settled down. Somewhat, He is already neutered.. has been for some time,. But it doesn't seem to phase him, which I know, shouldn't matter...K-9's are fixed and it doesn't really change their temperament...not just by my observations, but also a friend that is a Police K-9 trainer....

Anyhow, PLEASE people, help me out on this one, he really is a nice dog, just needing the right home...ASAP!!!
I don't usually beg or ask for help, BUT I AM NOW!!!!
STEPH
