I have known my vet for YEARS and here is the way it worked for us.

Originally, he told me not to use anything but marked product.  After years of using him, he finally came around and told me that the active drug in Heartguard IS ivermectin.  He said that the reason that he doesn't recommend it and dogs get hurt is OVERDOSE.  Just use the 1/10 of a cc to every ten pounds and you are okay.  He did say ONLY use the 1% ONLY.  I would say that if you have proper weight on your dogs and you use the RIGHT dosage GO FOR IT.  I have 100 lbs dogs so 1 cc once a month was the dose from my vet for my dogs.  I just shoot it into the back part of mouth.  Vet said it tastes horrible so I like to get it past the taste bud part of the mouth.

Ivermectin Kills everything. As far as a dose be careful you are not treating a horse.
It can be used topically to puppies with ear mites. It kill insects so you know it is strong.
Horses sweat it out through there pores so it helps keep any mite population down.
Haveing said all that I use it on my dogs and works better than any thing I have found.
Some times you my have mite and a fungal problem, Ivermectin kills fungus also.
You can resolve most of the problems systemicall, with an oral dose. However there is
a warning for border collies that they have a gene that does not allow the dog to elimanate the chimecal properly.
so start with a small dose to see if you get a reaction. JLP

I worked part time for a vet about 14 yrs ago, and she told me then it was safe to use the Zimectrin paste for my dogs, and I have used it ever since, you should be careful about the dosage, you can easily over/under dose.  I to this day use Zimectrin Gold for worming the adult dogs.  I also have horses and understand how to read the wormers as well.  I had two elderly dogs that both passed away 2 yrs ago at the age of 13 1/2, a shepherd and a dobie, and they both were on it their entire lives...  I've never had any problems using the paste.
