Does anyone have any experience in dealing with pannus in young dogs? Any better success with some meds over others? Thanks

no need for meds, stop feeding puppy, or high proteine food, best switch to raw, not grinded complete meat, as that often contain same additionals that cause the problem

Duke - I think you are confusing pannus with pano (panosteitis).

If no one else answers I'll see if my brother remembers what he had his dog on. It's been nine years since that dog passed so maybe there are different meds now???

My GSD developed it at age five. We took him to Eye Care for Animals and they diagnosed it.The medicine we gave him was Tacrolimus eye drops. It worked kept it under control, he never lost any vision and lived to be 15.

I suggest you take your dog to an eye specialist. Normal vets often misdiagnose and choose inappropriate meds. It happened to us until we visited Eye Care for Animals.

YES, definitely a doggy/animal opthamologist (who are also veterinarians). Not only will they prescribe drops but other treatments are suggested; doggy sunglasses; keep away from large bodies of water especially without doggy goggles (sunglasses) on and I Did not use drops forever like I should have on my guy and he did go blind. So it is a long term care commitment also related to and possibly brought on by auto immune disease. Its a little bit of a bugger to maintain. BOL Nan

I would like to add to my above post that I DID neuter this particular boy with pannus at about 10 months old soooooooo??? Did this possibly contribute to the condition who knows. Seeing a doggy eye specialist will also let you know if he or she has any other eye conditions you need to be aware of which most typical veterinarians may not detect for you. good luck Nan

Although there are ointments which can be used, I found it much easier to use eye drops, having tried the ointment, which I found very difficult to get into my dogs eyes. I had no problem whatsoever getting him to sit, watch me, eye drops and a treat. Of course, every dog is different, yours might prefer the ointment...

Don't waste time, starting treatment immediately after diagnosis is key. UV is not your dog's friend. Be very careful if you live in the mountains, near lakes or other reflecting bodies of water and be diligent giving the treatment every day and you will most likely have little problem keeping the condition in check.

I haven't contacted my brother but I know he went to an Eye Care for Animals location and used drops that kept the pannus under control, it did not get any worse.

If you decide to go with eye protection I would recommend the Rex Specs. We use them for ATVing with the dogs. They seem to be more comfortable than the individual eye type goggles.
