His breeder said that him and his sister are all black but lately my boy looks like he has alot of tan to be all black, and I can't seem to find a clear definition online. His vent is the same cream color as the top colored part of his legs. He is starting to get some cream/tan along his shoulder and in parts of his neck as well, does having the cream and tan auto disqalify him from being a bicolor? His sister is all black sans the white patch on her chest. They are 7.5 months old. Bonus him and his sister to make up for the unflatering photos.

"Black GSD with sable (ish) tail ?!"
Type that title into the space offered by the "Search Forums" box at top left of this page.
(Sorry I can't do you a direct link at the moment).

You can tell a lot by his pedigree and the colors of dogs in the pedigree,
If he's on here in the database it would be neat to see the different colors
of his family tree
I agree withBundishep, he is an extreme dark sable ;)
Just think...... if you were to shave all his fur off, I think he would then be tan,
Take your hand and runalong his fur in the opposite direction of how it lays flat,
you should see a lighter color underneath.
Sable is black tipped hairs.
If he was a solid black, he would be solid black under his tail/vent.....
The darkest sable I ever had was my girl maddie....

Those are Sable, rather than Tan /Gold, feet, b.t.w. Tan under the vent, whether on Sable or Bicolour dogs, isn't definitive really (as it will usually be tan, not sabled) - like the white patch on the chest of a black dog (see the sister), it kinda "just is" ! Sometimes the amount of the colour 'patch' expands or decreases with the age of dog. Agree with the others, this looks as though he's a (very) dark Sable. I directed you to the other thred because of your first photo; it contains interesting comments on an increasing phenomena: as more and more very dark sables and 'all-black' dogs increase in the breed, we are getting quite a lot of cases of these odd - usually sable, but sometimes 'silver' markings - 'bleeding' through on the lower legs as puppies grow up.
