wanted to try new camera out, had some fun, leg arm transfer was automatic. decoy was a bit not doing anything, search was on hard sealed surface, dog is a great tracker/search dog.
whay you think.

Was it my imagination or did he go after you when you took the sleeve away from him in the end?
Be careful, you dont want to create conflict between you and your dog...either "out" him or wait a couple of minutes for him to settle and drop the sleeve, then pull him back and let the helper challenge him, depending on his age, he should be going after the helper, if the helper is experienced and can swing the dog between prey and defense.
I like him, but, he needs control work and seeing how these clips are all you show of him, he may already have it, I have just never seen it.

I think you have a good enough dog, now you need to do good training :) Why the transfer from leg to arm? Is that what you're working for? and why? and if it's not, don't give it to him. He had an great opportunity to take the leg and bury it. Nothing changed that should have made him think, "let go and get something else" I would have kept him on that leg until I told him otherwise or the situation changed though I'd spend all my time teaching my dog to control the situation rather than rely on changing targets.
If it was my dog and he came off the leg to the arm and I knew he had that propensity, leg targets would be given and the handler should be ready with back pressure and then I'd bring an arm into view and when he went to transfer, they'd all get taken away and I'd leave. Tough shit dog, learn to bury what you have.
And I would work control. It's not hard to have a dog bite on the end of a leash, do that search with no leash. Puppies do drag ins from across a field for bites too. :)

I like the dog from what I've seen, the handling and decoy work has to be stronger. Unfortunately, I know these resources are limited in your area....but it is very easy to create bad habits/imprinting with dog like this.

Zdog, you can tell the dog was initially trained with an arm sleeve, the way he jumped on it as soon as he could, he feels more comfy on the arm. In order for any changes to happen and make the dog control the situation, VK4 would have to work with a helper who knows how to work dogs, I dont think he has access to one from what he has said in the past.

Yes, I could tell he was more comfy with the arm, and in the post he said it was an "automatic switch" which I interpreted as, it wasn't planned, just happened. But then in the video the way it was worded at the beginning I got the impression that's what they were going for??

session was to get a quick transfer i thought it worked perfect. previous session dog would not transfer off leg. decoy had to attack him with sleeve to get a transfer. dog learnt obviously. i couldn't. be happier with that transfer. mine like every other gsd was imprinted on the sleeve. just because really. seems so far dog will take whatever target is on offer, no shit.
how about the tracking edited out the pitch black parts but fark how many dogs hard surface track like its nothing.
yes yr right i edited out a little disagreement over who owns the sleevs. no biggie boy just gets a bit hyped, decoys know what's up with that and know the plan.
thanks for comments .

why train him to let go of a perfectly good grip? I guess I don't follow the logic whether it's for sports or real life? If I can get a dog to think about letting go, I can get away. If I have a weapon and your thought is to get him to go for the arm doing damage, I can give a target and take it away, now the dog has nothing. He's not hurting me anymore and if he tries to come in closer, I'm going to hurt him more. Getting dogs to chase moving targets makes for easy escapes.
as for tracking, I didn't see much. Looked to move across a parking lot head up the whole time until the very end he put his head down for a brief second. I can't think of any dog I've had that can't find a guy in a sleeve pretty quickly under those circumstances. So did your decoy walk in that way, then jump the wall and go up to the other building?

can't expect a comment from what tracking is presented in the clip. you have motivated me to do a tracking clip.
i don't care about nose up/down i think i do have more tracking knowledge than most, not bragging, only thing that counts is dog finds what left the track behind ricky tick. i will never be looking for dropped evidence. to me the dog has a real predatory style when searching for man. 100% natural + being raised with a bunch of meat dog currs prolly helped.
