Hi all, I have been trying to put some weight on my 22 months old male GSD. Have tried putting him on Beef & other meat products, Pedigree, raw meat (chicken, beef, mutton) etc but all in vain. He doesnt seem to put on any weight, dont even feel that he has even a bit fat on his body. Can some one suggest a rememdy? I just read a post on this messageboard abt Equipoise. can anyone throw some light on it??

Chicken backs (with bone, raw) and ground beef (raw). If we get in a rescue that's underweight but is otherwise healthy, that's what I put them on, for the most part. Has your dog been vetted lately? Is he kenneled or in the house? One of mine has to stay inside during these hot months, he'll run in his kennel constantly, and won't keep weight on regardless of what I feed him. I'm sure others will have good suggestions too, but there's mine ;)

my dog is in the house, he is a lazy bum but he is very active while he is out for a walk or something. i have tried all the raw food u have advised, even cooked it cuz he wont eat it all raw. have added veggies along with the meat. he is otherwise healthy but doesnt seem to keep the weight on, once he is out & running, he will loose all the weight. lets c, i m up for anything that works for my dog. I would also love to keep his coat shining & healthy cuz its a bit dull right now thanks for ur advise EMTBStephanie

add some oil (1-3 teaspoons per day) and some cooked pasta or cook potatoes.... some dogs are just like that, if he is otherwise healthy, lean is ok.

Try "satin balls". A google search will turn up several recipes. They are good for putting weight on the picky dog. Never heard of a dog that didn't love them.

Try the High Energy fryfood from Best Choice. It contains 44% poultry meat. It also has 36% protein and 26% fat.

This is my personal advice and experience: Try giving Body-Buliding Supplements! They are the best and ultimate. Remember the Human supplements are always better than Doggy one's! One of my friends who has had a similar but more severe problem has been successful in putting his dog into condition. His dog used to be at home most of the time and the room in which he used to be was really big so that he could run around a lot! but he was a real lazy fellow and hardly moved around in the house other than for his meals! But when he was out for a walk he used to be like a pulling active machine! Used to run and gallop like a grey-hound and lose all the weight he has put on in the day. So my friend started giving him Whey Protein,Creatin and some other weight gain supplements.Never go for Anabolic steroids only supplements, that too a limited dosage as it would be for a normal healthy human being! Don't be in a hurry and increase the dosage with the progress as it will show results within a month! Also the country where you live in also matters! Let me know in which part of the world you live. So that i can suggest something for the coat. This is my personal experience and it has really worked and i can be that it will work for everyone!

A dog is no different than a human, that if you want your dog to gain weight, you have to up his caloric intake. There are also certain times to feed different ingredients. If you work your dog, Post-workout your dog's body is a literal sponge. In a highly catabolic state it will soak up anything you give it! You only have 30minutes post workout before you miss the window. The faster you can get glucose into your dog's bloodstream and muscles, the less protein destroyed and the more glycogen stored. Whey in powder or liquid form takes an average of 20 minutes to absorb, making this form of protein number one in the race for assimilation. A simple carb transport of dextrose will transport nutrients to replace muscle glycogen. If you use fructose as the transport, it will replace liver glycogen. Bob Fritz started a company called APRL decades ago that specialized in canine nutrition and performance. One of his employees, Mike Williams broke off and started his own company called Peak Condition, out of Iowa. Mr. Williams used to advertise in Shutzhund USA. There is a company called K9 Power that has been in business for 7yrs. I really dont know if they bought out one or both of the above gentlemen or just have their products, but here are some canine supps. http://www.K9power.com If you want the best Whey protein, and they also have a great weight gainer. Try this company. I use their products and they give excellent service http://www.allthewhey.com
