Can Randy produce solid blacks ?

by D.H. on 02 December 2004 - 19:12

If you are talking about Randy v Grafental, then yes. His sire is black, making Randy black recessive. You need black or black recessive on both sides of a litter's pedigree in order to get black. Meaning the bitch has to be either solid black, or black recessive. Making a dog black recessive goes further back in the pedigree than just the parent. If a sibling of an ancestor is black, then that sibling was black recessive and that can crop up again in the present dog in the right combination with the breeding partner.

Yup, (I knew that) -- Just wanted to know if that was in Randy's genes. I personally do not want a black dog. People do get hung up on colors and I suppose they have a right. I am partial to bi-colors and dark sables - but we have had (normal) black/tan's and the darker orange/gold. Untimately, it's the dog on inside that matters. Hopefully we can get both to match. Someone who had approached us looking for a black puppy (a long time ago) was warned that they may find the righ color in the wrong dog - and sure enough - they found one - it got a little older and proceeed to eat their kids !!! If you want a Blue Volvo and I try to sell you a Blue Toyota - and say - well - it's BLUE and that's what you wanted -- it's not really -- it's that whole wolf in German shepherd clothes thing -- Be careful what you wish for. Better a black GSD than a WHITE one then .
