It is my opinion that if you have to ask what the difference is between Show and Working Lines then you are not knowledgable enough to breed GSD's. Nothing wrong with asking and it is important that people do ask and learn but my point is directed at anyone already breeding and about to start breeding GSD's. To be a good breeder you need to know what you are doing and to be very knowledgable about the breed.

But everyone has to start somewhere...

too much misinformation out there, and too many people propagating that misinformation

you can only learn on your own mistakes

I would hope that we can learn from EACH OTHERS' mistakes as well. If not, I have been wasting a lot of my precious time posting information about my own mistakes to this board. SS

you need to make some mistakes yourself in order to learn... not enough to just read about them. Though it helps :o).

by spook101 on 17 February 2007 - 19:02

That's foolish. Do you have to take a bullet to know they kill? Sure you'll make mistakes, but if you're not learning from someone elses mistakes you're wasting your time and will never attain you're potential. One of the reason we teach kids history is so they can learn from other peoples mistakes.

I am not talking about the obvious or extremes here. I am not going to jump off a bridge knowing it will kill me. But I may jump off one with a bungee cord. Or a parachute. If other peoples experience were enough to go by we would not need any personal experiences at all. And what would we have left to teach the following generations? Nothing personal to give. Sorry, I do not live my life in a safe bubble. Feel free to do so yourself though, I would in no way want to take away your personal level of freedom and experiences. Too many people these days choose to just sit back instead of do. You learn by doing. Really learn that is. And yearn for more. That would be called progress then. Without personal mistakes you would not have light my friend. 10thousand mistakes worth to create that one single light bulb.

DR: Progress is made by experimentation. Everyone does not go by YOUR explanation of a working line or a show line, just like everyone does not subscribe to YOUR opinion about who should be "allowed" or "knowledgeable" enough to breed GSD's. There is more than one path to the top of the mountain my friend, and you are not the guide for the whole world. Of course, I do not have as much knowledge as you do about GSD's, but then, you do not have as much knowledge as, let's say, hodie or D.H. or Gustav. Should you be breeding GSD's if you can not pick out the VA dogs from the SG dogs, without knowing their names? Should you be breeding GSD's if you can not produce better than H. Martin or Joe Blow, or should only the guys and gals that "really have it right" be breeding? Then who decides who "really has it right"? I do not breed yet, I am seeking more knowledge, but when and if I do, I will put my produced dogs against yours anyday because I don't think I know it all yet and will act accordingly. Apparently some do think they know it all and feel sorry for the rest of us :) I ask questions to get different opinions to formulate my own thoughts about which directions to go with my future breeding plans. Of course I know that the dogs that have a propensity to produce better working offspring but are less structured confirmation wise (read, "uglier" IMO), are working line dogs. Of course I know that dogs more confirmation wise structured (read, "prettier" IMO) who have a propensity to produce offspring that are less apt to excell in the working abilities, are show lines. Duh.

Reply there are quite a few differences that are CONsistant then there are always canines that are above the norm. for instance workinglines bone substance stance and physiological outlook all are geared to excessive work ability. stronger bites faster movemnt tighter turns a totlay different structure most squarer and boxier then that of a showline. again i said most there are many V rated workinglines but some also stem from political gifts. say you showed your pretty nice looking working line at your club here in the states and it achieved v2 then you bring it to another club now you just recieved a sg rating??? HUH? showlines are bred to look a certain way and they do have to perform the Schurz. ROUTINE and i have also seen some do extremely well in work but after tall the years of working GSD's and taking thousands of bites that rules and majority condemn the verdict. Consistantly the working lines are more focused, harder and longer working, better air strong bite and typically more courage not saying that i haven't seen it in a choosen few good working showlines Diva Von Der Malchower Aue, Odin Hirchell etc. just in my non scientific study this is My Opinion C.S.
