Seems so simple but can those of you who really know what it is you are talking about recommend a high quality dog food for puppies, young dogs and then adults...What would be a good high quality diet for a GSD pup through adulthood...???A breeder I know uses Eukanuba...What do you think...Also what kind of suppliments are suggested...??? Thanks for all the help I am currently in the process of deciding between some of the kennels some of you recommended that are located in central Florida... Thanks, Rob

We feed Canine Caviar and Royal Canin. From what comments have been given here on previous threads Eukanuba is not used by many.

I feed Royal Canin Maxi GS24 exclusively to the adults. For babies, I use Bil-Jac large breed puppy food because it has a smaller kibble and is more easily wettable for developing teeth. When they are older. say twelve (12) weeks old I gradually switch them to the Royal Canin large breed puppy kibble. I have good luck with this selection, with firm stools and normal growth. Of course I am careful how much I feed the puppies, and rely more on experience than the amounts indicated on the bag label. There are other good foods out there-no doubt about it. I am happy with the ones that I have used for more than five (5) years. I don't even remember what I used to feed, but Eukanuba and Purina come to mind. Bob-O

I feed a raw diet. My dogs enjoy it alot more and are MUCH healthier than when they were on high quality kibble. My lab mix used to have alot of ear and bladder infections and we were at the vets almost every month.. Sience I swiched her I have had no problems to this day with her. Its not much more expensive if you buy bulk, and the dogs love it. Some breeders that I have seen will even give the puppies (when they are old enough to chew) a chicken leg and let the litter of pups chew on it. Andrea

For those interested in feeding kibble, I have a food grading document, that I found very useful. I don't know if there is somewhere to post a document on this site, or not, but I can e-mail it to anyone who is interrested in looking at it. Tari Jolin w453angel@earthlink.net

One of the breeders I've been in contact with uses Eukanuba for puppies and it struck me as odd...???I appreciate the tips as there will be a pup in my future thanks to a lot of good advise I've received here about what to do, and what not to do concerning various breeders... Based on your prior experiences (allow me to pick your brain here) how much should a young puppy (8 weeks) vs a 12+ week old pup be fed...???How often...If whats on the bag is wrong, tell me what is right... Help me to help myself...Thanks, Rob

We feed Royal Canin Maxi GS24 to the adults, Royal Canin Babydog to the pregnant and nursing bitches and young puppies. When the puppies turn 5 months they will go to Royal Canin Largebreed Puppy. As far as how much to feed, this depends on the food you feed. Go off the package directions for age and weight and keep an eye on the condition pf the puppy that it is not too fat or too thin. Young puppies should eat 3 times a day.

Is that a raw chicken leg...???

by roborob on 19 January 2007 - 17:01

Can you give me an idea of what a raw diet might consist of...???One of our GSDs was fed a chicken leg and thigh every day of his life but it was cooked...Give me some ideas of what a raw diet might be and does it vary from say week to week...???

For my money there is nothing better for my dogs than Royal Canin, and I sure have tried a lot of them out there. I start the puppies on Baby Dog Maxi at four weeks (weaning) along with their mother. By six weeks they are full steam ahead and I feed all they want of the stuff (soaked). The coat, skin, and growth is just super. At twelve weeks, I cut them back to two feedings a day of four cups each feeding. At fifteen months it's puppy and at twenty four months, it's adult maxi. For those who can buy use Royal Canin and buy from a distributor, look for the Royal Canin Pro. Same great food, but it comes in 40# bags instead of 35# and costs less. Also, the Baby Dog is called, "Starter" and comes in a 40# bag and costs much, much less than the 7# bags on the shelf.
