A client gave me a post dated check for a deposit, I accepted it and it cleared. I told the client that I expected cash for the puppy on pick up. Today he came to pick up the puppy and had only half the balance and asked if I would accept a post dated check for the rest.

What would you do?

A) take the cash, the post dated check and give the puppy
B) ask him to come back in a few days with the cash and keep the puppy

Is there an option C?  refund the deposit and keep the puppy? I hate when people pull stunts like that.  Anyhow it would be option B.  I have been screwed by way to many pay later people.  That is why training fees are now 1/2 up front.  I used to just get a check when people picked up their pooch but I have had so many bounced board and training checks that I had to change my policy.

I thought about option C........but only hafter he left.

I'm with Brynjulf.
I hate it when people try crap like that. To me it shows a lack of honesty.
I would have returned the deposit and kept the puppy.

He said the money's in the bank, but his ATM limited how much he could take out (Saturday 4pm) and he would be back on Monday with the cash. We'll see.....

I only accept credit cards and bank account transfers via Paypal for puppies if I don't know the buyer personally.  It has been foolproof.  I recieved no buyers from Nigeria, or agents in Tim Buck Too that wanted to pay more and take "product" later.   I have nearly 100k in bogus checks  and international money orders from the last 2 litters!   (fun to turn in to authorities),  but none on this litter!   They can get on your computer and transfer the money tomorrow!

May I now ask what you had done with this sale?

After reading the many post I do like option C, but I also still like my PM to you of following your instinct...so what cha do about this  :)

I can understand Brynjulf's perspective but for me, it also depends on the price of the puppy. I can't say that I would be particularly comfortable taking $1,000+ in cash from the bank and walking around with it. I've been mugged three times so it is a legitimate concern. My breeder accepted a cheque from me for my pup but he sees me every week for training. Of course, credit card and paypal would have been fine with me (but not all breeders are comfortable with technology). :)
