See My dogs Baily and keizer went missing at the sametime. I noticed them missing at 630am and baily came back alone at 715am, Baily is really timid and wont go up to strangers, she is really co dependent on keizer, It shocks me that she seperated from him and came home one her own. Thats why i think something happend to him. Either he got hurt and couldnt make it home or someone got him and couldnt catch her. I tried asking baily where keizer is and she just layed down and covered her nose, like she was scared. she was real scared when she came home, it seems something bad happend. she wasnt even excited to be home and to see me.

I was so hoping that we'd have good news today.  I don't think it's time to give up just yet.  When my terrier was gone, NOBODY saw him and I thought the worst also.  I cried my eyes out but didn't give up.   I was amazed he came back on his own.  We had two other dogs at the time so could not leave the gate opened, he went to the neighbor's and knocked on their door!  It was midnight and I'm so glad they were up and heard him!  It's nice to hear so many people are helping, it increases the chances of finding him as the word will spread.  Wishing you have him home safe and sound very soon.

I don't think it's terrible to want to keep a pup.  Talk to your buyers, explain the situation and see if anyone is willing to let you keep one.  Even if he does return, it wouldn't be such a bad thing to have a puppy to enjoy!  Best of luck, hang in there.

Oh, you poor thing. Try not to lose hope, though. Is Keizer microchipped? I'm saying another prayer for you.

NO he is not chipped, but he is tagged. I checked in to chipping  before and they say here in my area, they dont have a scanner 60 mile radius, so their didnt seem to be a point to it. We put out a 450 dollar reward, so instead of someone wanting to keep my dog,  they can buy them one with the reward, just give me mine back.  So many people around here, i think would just keep it. People are always stealing dogs.  I dont worry about my dogs getting stolen in my yard, when people walk up they act like mad rabid dogs ready to kill and with the three of them and can look crazy, but as soon as you open the fence, they stop barking, they dont jump, or kill, or bite. But i let them out in the front all the time with no leash, they dont step off the curb as long as im out there with them. if they start to chase a cat or a squirl, i just sey ehh! and they stop. People can walk up to them,  what ever. Kiezer can count to four,  and shakes and plays dead.  He is the best dog in the world. God, i miss him. I'm just typing with no point now.

I think someone is going to want to keep him. People are always offering money for him. When where at the lake, or at the park.

Keep the faith.  Look, if he was hurt, you'd either a) have found him by the side of the road (God forbid).  You didn't, so he isn't there, or b) he'd be at an area vet's or the pound, and if you've checked those places he's not there.  Keep checking though.  So don't worry about the hurt thing.  Your other dog, being timid, was probably just scared by the whole thing.

If somebody does have him and wants to keep him, the kids and the mailman and others will ferret it out, and if the stealers don't return him, they may just let him loose and he'll come back.  Everybody knows you're looking, which is good and will make him hard to hide.

A dirty, smelly article of your own is indeed a good thing to put out.  Eye level, fine, and also one on the ground - many a hunting dog has been found curled up on his owner's shirt early in the morning.

Because you do have another dog, take it for walks all around everywhere and watch it - watch for reactions.  It will know if it smells or hears your dog somewhere, so be alert.  It doesn't have to be jumping up & down like Lassie, but watch it's ears, head turns, anything for a sign you need to check out.  Also, your dog may come to your other dog even when it won't come to you.

If you hear a dog barking in the distance but you know it's NOT your dog, check it out anyway, because the dog could be barking at the new dog next door, and that new dog could be yours.

"Definitely put up posters where drivers will see them."

Gave this a separate post because it's important:  Beware of scam artists.  A common scam is to get a call saying I'm a truck driver passing through and I have your dog.  They'll describe it.  They'll want you to wire some money Western Union - either the reward or "just some gas money" to bring it back on their next run.  This is a scam.  Take all the information you can get and notify your police dept. but do NOT wire any money no matter how convincing they seem.  They'll even pretend they have the dog with them: "What's his name?  Keizer?  Here, Keizer, c'mere, boy...Yes! he knows that name! This is definitely him!"

Beware.

"They are usually greeted with a harsh, where the hell you been! And a harsh get your ass up on the deck !"  [etc.: lose their freedom, no playing, keep the attitude...]

"My dogs still run off at times, "

Of course they do.  See the connection?  That's not surprising at all considering what they get when they come back.

"No rewards for mistakes or bad behavior."

You are still punishing them for the "mistake" of coming home.  Yes, I know some dogs DO understand that running off is wrong, but they also understand fully that once they're out, they are going to be punished when they come back, so therefore the smart ones don't come immediately back (i.e., not go off).  You have taught them to run, because they know they'll be punished, so off they go.  They come back because dogs simply come back home most of the time.

Sorry to hear about your dog... I'm keeping everything crossed for you and Keizer.

Two Moons... treating them like you do is why your dogs still run off.  Try giving them a big squeeze and lots of praise.

TessJ10

Excellent reminder about the scams.  There are maggots out there that prey on distraught people exactly as you say.  I'm glad you thought to post about it.
